Rino 120 changes waypoint names when uploaded to National Geographic TOPO!

| I love National Geographic's State Series TOPO! maps. I use it to
create waypoints, plot routes, etc.
Here's the problem:
When I import waypoints from my Rino 120, every waypoint name is
messed
up with four vertical bars ( |||| ) at the beginning of each name,
which obscures several characters from the original name. Each
waypoint comes up with an error message that I need to change names to
be compatible with the GPS. They were created on the GPS! How could
the name possibly incompatible? Is there a fix or a setting I can
change to eliminate this one glitch from an otherwise lovely
experience?

| I also like the NG Topo! state series, but in my opinion the software should
really be called a beta. It has all sorts of glitches like the one you
describe. I had a waypoint problem similar to what you describe but I
cannot remember exactly the context was or what I did to solve it. That
being said, it may have had something to do with whether I was downloading
the waypoints to a file that already had waypoints in it. You might try
checking the receiver settings to see if they actually match the values for
your unit. If that fails to help, tell TOPO that you have another receiver
and see what happens.
Here is one peculiarity that I have noticed: If I download a track from a
GPS V with TOPO set to GPS V as the receiver, TOPO will not draw a line for
the track. The trackpoints will show up as waypoints in the usual way, but
no line. If I tell TOPO that I am using a Geko 201, the software behaves
normally and draws the track line as expected.
Here is another one, using the compass (anchor) tool, try to draw line due
north (0.00000 degrees), the normal dialog box opens, but the line does not
appear on the map. I have noticed the same behavior with the route tool in
the shift mode (straight lines). Lines due E,W,N or S (I forget just which
one or ones) would not show up. I told NG tech support about this a couple
versions ago, but they still haven't fixed it.
