Loading City Navigator Ver 7 on Streetpilot 2620

| Got my wife a 2720 for Christmas. Decided to order CN ver 7 for my 2620.
Ver 7 would get to 92% loaded then failed to finish. Contacted
Garmin-suggested I make sure that the DVD was in a DVD drive. I had used a
CD drive so make the correction. Maps loaded to 96% this time before
bombing.
I tried to go back to Ver 6 and can't get that to load completely now
either. I use my 2620 in my business everyday, so this is a very big
hassel. Anyone have any ideas?

Ed, have you downloaded the latest Mapsource from Garmin?

I don't have any ideas, though I'm really curious as to how you got the
DVD to work in a CD drive.

| Thanks for the reply.
The CD drive appeared to read the info just fine. The tech at Garmin
implied that this was a common problem with not getting all of ver 7 on the
2620.

Ed,
I've run into similar problems when loading all the maps to a CF card
for my 2610. What's worked for me in the past was to shut down every
running program or process not connected with the map transfer. In
particular shut down anti-virus programs. Also, if you're running
Windows XP, open the device manager and then open the USB Controller
section. You should see one or more lines saying: "USB Root Hub." For
each such line, right-click on it, then click Properties and the Power
Management tab. If it is checked, uncheck the box that says, "Allow the
computer to turn off this device to save power." I assume a similar
process will work for earlier Windows operating systems.
Apparently, the map transfer process needs every computer resource it
can get its hands on when downloading all the City Navigator maps.
Hope this helps.

| Thanks for all the input.
A Garmin Tech finally called the shot. He said some of the 2620 disk drives
were not fully formatted and would not load all of CN Ver 7. He sent me a
new drive with Ver 7 loaded on it and everything is peachy keen.
Hope this might save other 2620 owners from high order frustration.

| Hadn't ever heard of that. Thanks Ed for letting us know.

How very bizarre!

It might not be that bizarre, the tech guy may have been saying that the
drive had unpartitioned (and unformatted too, of course) space on it.
That can happen if they created an image file of a smaller drive (or
even even a CF or SD card seen as a removable drive) to use for loading
drives for production. That will create a drive the size of the
original partition regardless of the size of the drive.
I forget, does the 2620 have a micro drive and not a 2.5" ATA drive?
Those came in pretty small increments, like 1, 2, 4, and 6 GB in the
early stages.
One of the Magellan's that is specified as having a 10GB hard drive
actually has a 20GB hard drive because they have quite making the 10GB
models.
