OK guys....don't roll your eyes about another USB to Etrex thread. I'm
looking to find a Powered USB to Garmin Etrex data cable.

I currently have the converter cables to allow unpowered data from the
Garmin to Laptop USB via a Belkin adapter combined with a powered Garmin
to 12 v cigarette plug cable. But it's kluggy. Cables all over the
place and most of the time I'm running boats without 12v cigarette
lighter plugs. So I eat batteries while monitoring data on the laptop.

What I'm looking for is one slick cable that will connect from my Etrex
to the USB on my laptop that does data and also powers the Etrex too.
Like this....

Etrex<----------data/power-------------->Laptop USB

Yup, I know USB is 5 volts and the Etrex is 3 volts but a simple voltage
reduction device integral to the cable sounds not too technologically
sophisicated. But then again, I'm not an electrical engineer. I don't
know if there is enough juice to keep the Etrex live though without
batteries. I think, (an assumption always getting me in trouble), that
USBs can handle 100mA...or is it 500mA?

I see Pfranc has some cables but they look like they all have a 12v
cigarette plugs.

Any ideas/suggestions out there?

Thanks

Try using Google first! Search on "etrex usb power" and the second hit
should have been: http://pfranc.com/usb/etrex.htm
You'll need to solder in a couple of diodes or a zener but the modification
is trivial.

Actually, I stopped reading after I found the link I remembered but further
down the same list you'll find exactly what you're after ready to use - even
one that will power your etrex fom either the USB or a Cigar lighter.

Thanks for the link. Before I messaged this news group I did a Google
search and came up with Pfranc and all I found was a method to customize
his USB adapter. I'm not one for cracking open USB adapters and
soldering things onto PC boards. By the time I got through doing that,
I'd have the house burnt down. :-)

My request was for information on where to buy a simple cable with power
and data from the Etrex to the USB port on my laptop without a cigarette
plug, an adapter or customized wiring. My initial message may not have
described my needs appropriately. I want something where the USB
provides both power and data that I can buy. Plug and play sort of thing.

Perhaps I missed a new product Pfranc is selling. Any suggestions will
be appreciated.

Try this - it's the link just below the pFranc one in the Google search.
