| I own a Garmin Gpsmap 60c and an Ipaq 2210, I would like to know if, with a
cable like this
http://www.gpscity.com/item-gps-cit...jgr-ipaqcig.htm ,
it is possible to save tracks ( active logs, not saved tracks) and waypoints
into the ipaq, using the pda as a datalogger. For short trips 10000
trackpoints are enough, but when I travel for 2-3 weeks I prefer a bigger
memory.
Thank you very much

That cable connects the serial port of the GPS to that of the iPAQ so
that you can send NMEA data to a navigation application running on the
iPAQ.
There are a number of PDA nav applications that will save track logs to
a file, Ozi Explorer-CE will do it.
If you were running an ascii terminal application (like TeraTerm-CE) you
could capture the NMEA data on a real time basis and have it saved to a
log file on the iPAQ. That would required both devices to be on all the
time of course.
I don't know of an iPAQ application that will download the tracklog and
waypoints from a GPS.
Are you using the GPS for navigation too? Or is just being used to
collect data?

My idea is to use the Garmin using the day ( hiking) and then save the
tracklog into the PDA, without using a laptop. I could save the track in the
GPSr, but maybe you already know that there is a loss of information and
this is not good. I know I can use the pda for real time navigation, but
that's not my intention. What i want is a sort of Mapsource ( or similar
product ) to install on the Ipaq to save the entire tracklog.
Thank you for your answer, Jack

| Hi J.D.,
We have logged raw GPS data to our iPaq 2210 using Bluetooth. But if
the Garmin Gpsmap 60c cable is compatible with the 2210, then it should
work well to transmit the serial data.
Most any commercial navigation program for the Pocket PC will record a
trip-trace of your route. The format it logs it in though may vary
widely. And as Jack already mentioned, "you could capture the NMEA
data on a real time basis and have it saved to a
log text file on the iPAQ". Which is what we did using our own
commercial application, PocketDAQ Pro (http://www.appliedpda.com).
The only challenge afterwards, is then a software package on your
laptop that could input that raw GPS data and process it accordingly to
display your route, etc.
Hope this helps.

I had forgotten it, but the venerable g7towin application has also been
ported to work on some PDAs. That is called g7toCE and you can learn
more about it here:
http://www.gpsinformation.org/ronh/#g7toCE
That will download from the Garmins that have serial ports but not USB
only models. That may be able to do what you want to do.

Thank you, I will try your software as soon as I get the cable.

Thank you, I'm gonna check it.
