Garmin StreetPilot 27xx or 28xx; can't go wrong!

What Wayne said!

There are a number of smaller, cheaper, more heavily advertised,
dashmounts (the nuvi, and StreetPilot "i" and "c" series for example)
that have more brain candy on them like XM receivers and MP3 players.
But those models are a little more inept on the navigation features and
capabilities. They leave off things like track display, track
recording, and multiple destination routing.

Go for a unit with the SiRF chipset. This should work on all rental cars
- also those with front windows that normally block GPS'es.

StreetPilot C550 and Nüvi 660 both got what you need.

I'd be careful of the tiny GPS units because you may not be able to
see what's on the screen when you take that quick look while driving.
I got a C550 a few weeks ago and have had in two of my cars, my
daughter's car and a rental car. The unit, power cord and windshield
mount all fit nicely in a small PlaySkool hard plastic box that I
lined with foam packing material, with holes cut for each item.

It's easy to switch car to car, easy to see and easy to use. Plus, I
like the text to voice feature that says, "Left turn on Main street in
..2 miles," and then when I get to the street, "Turn left on Mail
street," a lot better than the other one I had didn't give names of
the streets, just, "Right turn coming up in 300 yards." The bluetooth
feature is nice too.

For convenience (smaller) the c550. For best routing, the 2720 or 2730
because they offer options the other Garmins don't have, including more
precise avoidances for better routing and a lot more features like
multiple routing.

As good as all Garmins are, the can take you on some weird routes. The
prefs and more user customization in the 2720/2730 helps eliminate
these problems.

I'm real happy with my Garmin Quest. I just bought a second one for my
wife.

Check Ebay for some good prices under $300.
