I got CN6 with my 276C. CN8 is the newest. Is there really that much of a
change in the versions to warrant buying the newer version? Any issues?
Thanks!

Only you can answer that. Use the map viewer on Garmin's web site
to see what's changed in your area, and in areas that you frequent.

Thanks for the reply. I have checked out the screen caps. Was hoping for
someone's realt time dealings with the newer versions. I know with each map
change, there are chamges. Just guessed from 6-8 might have caused some
feedback.

I'm ready to step up and add my $3.00 worth. I've been with Garmin sine my
Emap days.

Map chunks are way bigger. Due to increased slack you may need
a bigger memory card (I had to upgrade from 256 to 512 MB).

Not the screen captures. Use the map viewer. It's an interactive
applet on their Web site that lets you zoom in and look around at the map
data.

Since we don't know where you live or where you travel, it's hard
to provide specific feedback. The general answer is "yes, there are
updated roads". But I don't suspect that this is helpful information.

Don't forget that the POI (Points Of Interest) will be two years more
up to date. If you use that to find things that start up and go out of
business frequently (like Restaurants), it may be of value to have the
new version.

Thanks for the responses. I'm in NY. The map chunk size was the type thing I
was looking for. I know roads would be added, but was wondering about the
program itself, map sizes, did the routing change, things of that sort. I
have a 128mb card, but was thinking about going up to the 256 or 512.

v8 chunk sizes are smaller than v7 but larger than v6. About half-way
in between.

128mb may be tight.

For the cost of purchasing a 256 or 512 card, I would just jump up to 1G or
2G and not have to worry about having to load or unload maps for your area
(s).

The 276C uses Garmin's data cards, not standard media. 512mb is the largest.

I have been updating annually, v6 to v7 to v8 with no regrets. Each
newer version does include newer roads but, and a big BUT, old roads
that have been missing all along don't seem to ever get picked up. For
example, just yesterday I found myself bicycling on a nonexistant road
in Haverhill, Massachusetts as viewed with CN 8. On my GPS I have maps
from both CN 8 and Metroguide 4. Sure enough, when I switched to the
very old Metroguide 4, the GPS showed that I actually was on a road.

One significant improvement that I have noticed with v8 is that they
seem to have picked up those renumbered exits. Most states seem to be
using mile points now for exit numbers rather than serially assigning
them.

They have also probably updated points of interest, but I'll never know
for sure because I'm not about to make a comparison. On the same
subject, I often wonder how they select their points of interest. I see
listed in my town what are probably home businesses in residential
areas that no one is likely interested in, but major department stores
such as Sears, K-Mart and Target are missing.

I suppose that when I discover an instance of missing roads that I
could notify Garmin and they would probably show up in the next
edition.

No mapping program will ever be perfect.
