I used a TomTom device based on TeleAtlas maps and couldn't have been more
disappointed. A 3-year-old major highway revision in downtown Seattle was
COMPLETELY absent, which would have made all attempts to route onto I-90 eastbound
fail. Both a built-in (Denso-based) GPS and our Garmin Nuvi 350 (which replaced
the TomTom) did much better. (The TomTom's POI database was also pretty terrible,
as was the interface for selecting them, but that's only peripherally related.)
What it comes down to is how often a manufacturer will update the maps for their
device, not the underlying map accuracy. I could believe that TeleAtlas might do
updates more frequently and/or be more responsive - but if the GPS manufacturer
(TomTom in this case) doesn't get the latest updated data and massage it into an
available form, it won't make any difference to your device or your driving
experience.
In my limited experience so far, Garmin seems superior.
