Author Loading City Nav v8 to 2720

I've downloaded, installed and unlocked City Navigator North America NT v8
for my StreetPilot 2720. Unlike prior unlocking experiences, this was very
smooth and painless. As part of the process, the instructions had me
connect the GPS and the "unit code" was automatically updated. So far so
good.

So now... how do I load the v8 maps to the unit? Is it as simple as what
I've done a hundred times with my old SP-3 data card, where I simply select
the maps of interest (in this case, all of them) and send them to the
GPS/data card? The manual is silent on how to actually transfer the mapset.

TIA

I take it you now have NT v7 in your 2720 so you will have to get the
update NT v8 disk from garmin and after the disk installs the NT v8 on
your computer then it will transfer the NT v8 to your 2720. Just one
thing garmin does not tell you on their site is that after you load NT
v8 to your 2720 you will only have around 709 mb left for additional
maps so if you have 750 mb loaded now you will want to lower it to 709
mb or lower so NT v8 has enough room to load in it's seperate section
for the NT maps.

That information in the help file is for tranfering additional mapsets
to your 2720 in the additional space provided which is around 709 mb
and is not talking about tranfering the NT maps to it's seperate
section for only NT mapsets. You will have to use an update disk to
install over NT v7 maps.

I misspoke when I said "downloaded." Yes, I've received the DVD and
successfull installed the
v8 update disk to my laptop. The unlocking codes, which it obtained
automatically from my account on the Garmin website, worked fine. The
process did not, however, load the v8 to the 2720 (where v7 is already
installed).

I've read this whole thread but I'm still not sure what to do. Do I
need to use some special process to replace the v7 pre-loaded maps with v8?
That's where I'm hung up. Should the installation process have installed
the maps on the 2720? I did have it hooked up and the firmware was updated,
but the maps didn't install.

Jim-

I share your quandary. Please see my side thread about combined map sets.

I think where this might be headed, though, is that NT versions will replace
pre-loaded map sets automatically. I vaguely recall something about this when
the 2720 first came out.

In my case, I already had CN US v8 preloaded when I received my 2720.

What I want to do is to combine the continental portion of CN US NT v8 with
the part of CN Europe v8 covering the UK and Ireland. At this point, I, too,
am unclear about how to replace the pre-loaded version. I suspect, though,
that the CN US NT DVD should be loaded to your PC, unlocked for the device(s)
involved and downloaded the 2720. Since my present version of CN Europe v8 is
not "NT" I think that goes into the 7+ GB free space. I wonder what would
happen when combining maps from two different Garmin NT products.

At any rate, I, too, have asked Jerry for clarification.

I think I stumbled onto something when I tried redoing the update steps just
to see if I missed something. The first time I did it, the maps installed
to the laptop, the program successfully retrieved the unlock code from the
Garmin website, and then a dialog box announced that the GPS "unit code"
needed to be updated before the maps could be updated. This was promptly
and successfully completed. However, the maps did not transfer as I
expected they would.

Just now, repeating the steps to see if I had missed something, I got a new
dialog box that said something like "Your GPS will now be updated." And
like magic, the new maps began transferring to the GPS automatically. I
believe the critical factor is that if the unit code needs to be updated, it
does that first and completes the whole process, then you have to go back
and repeat the installation steps. There were no instructions to this
effect; I just stumbled into it. Now, after about 10 minutes, the dialog
estimates 20% completed, 39minutes remaining. That sounds about right to
me.

So I hope after this completes my questions will have been answered :-)

Garmin isn't clear on how to do update. What a shame. Anyway, this
link will explain how. Hope this helps.

Thanks. This answers the questions I've had.

I've also emailed Garmin support. Be interesting to see their response.

This looks like an inadequacy in their documentation.

The problem was even though I completed all the steps in the link below, the
maps did not transfer. The reason, I think, is that the "unit code"
(whatever that is -- firmware version, perhaps?) had to be updated first,
and after that was completed the installation program exited without loading
the maps or giving any kind of instructions about re-running the
installation routine.

Happily, all my questions have been answered. When I started up the
installation routine a second time, it apparently detected it hadn't
completed the installation and promptly starting transferring maps to the
GPS. Like the link below says, it took over an hour but there were no other
problems. I now have City Nav v8 installed in my 2720 (and MapSource on my
laptop).

I had a problem with removing Version 5. There is no uninstall for the
maps only, and if you delete the directory with the img files Mapsource
stops working.
Any idea on how to do that?
