I noticed the same thing in my Manhattan neighborhood, the POIs are
close to useless. They even feature a gas station next door, which
puzzled me until I checked whitepages.com: my Chevron lives there, but
I'm pretty sure he ain't selling gas!

Why not? With GPS devices becoming ever-more popular, it's only a matter
of time before the users start maintaining an open-source POI and road
database, which you can then sync every day if you wish.
