Author Garmin 12v power supply cable failing

I have purchased two replacement 12v power supply cables and they fail
at the point where the cable plugs into the unit. It fits very snugly
and so does not come out easily. As result the part of the plug that
has the 90degree angle eventually seperates. Not sure if this is a
design flaw and/how to prevent this from happening in the future. I
have tried to be very diligent on removing the plug but only after a
month with this cable it is seperating.
Any thoughts or suggestions on this issue.
Thanks
Brian

Boy, I think either you have extremely bad luck or we have
extremely good luck. I have a 76CSx and a friend of mine has
a 76CS and neither of us has had any problem with what
you're describing.

What exactly do you mean by that?

Is it the round connector with four pins? On my 76Cx that slides in and
out very easily, almost too easily as it sometimes loses contact and I
get the external power lost alarm.

On the OEM Garmin cables, the plug is a one piece assembly molded onto
the end of the cable, it will not open or separate into two pieces. If
you buying one of the cheap Chinese copies maybe you just need to treat
yourself to a better cable. The Garmin cables are cheap enough on eBay,
look for a 010-10085-00 cable.

If you grip the round plug body and push it up with the tips of your
fingers, it should not put any excessive strain on the plug.

The orginal Garmin cable seperated at the 90 degree part as well but
took a year. The replacment may have been an off brand as the
original replacment by Garmin was $40 for a cable (with speaker -
which I don't use). I purchased a 12v cable minus speaker of a GPS
site for $25 (included shipping) and it lasted less than a month.
Knowing the cable had issues from the original I tried to be very
carful about taking the cable out by grabbint the round body plug but
it was tight gettingin and out as was the original. But it sounds
like no one has had the same experience as me so I guess I'll be real
super duper careful and handle with kid gloves.

It depends. If you have a 276C, I know two folks, having the same
problem. If 76/60C, it may be just bad luck.

Use some silicone spray.
