Mapsource and cardreader
|
|
|
| Can mapsource be used with a normal cardreader instead of connection through
the etrex itself?
According to the manual it should (i guess) but the application leaves me
with no option to select a card/drive.

Yes it can. I have a GPSmap 76csx and I find it faster to use the cardreader
and USB connection. Plug in cardreader with card first then fire-up
Mapsource and use the transfer to or from device and it should locate the
reader.

May be a driver issue. Mapsource works fine with
the Garmin custom memory cards of the old SP-III
type and the matching card reader/writer, but does
take Garmin drivers to work. Perhaps missing
drivers is why a generic cardreader for
camera-type cards is not working?

Is the reader visible in Windows Explorer? You may have to have some
media in the reader to see it from MapSource. If you can see a
Removable Drive in Windows Explorer you should be offered that same
drive as one of the choices for doing a transfer to from MapSource.
Are you using an older version of MapSource? The current version is
like 6.11 or 6.13, that updates are a free download from Garmin.

The card itself is visible and accessible in explorer.
Mapsource 6.11.3, gonna install 6.11.5 now. I'll be back ;-)

When you insert the card - can you see the data in the drive?
I just checked at home now, and as long as MapSource seems to se a removable
drive with a card I can choose that drive.

The card is currently empty (new).
I'm offered the option to _read_ maps (and only maps). When writing it
doesn't offer me the option to write on the card.

I didn't follow this thread to know what type of card you have, but if =
it
CF or similar then you can just FORMAT (just like floppy, hard drive) =
then
it should give the Read/Write option.
But you may wanna double check as I do use CF and some I have to format
and some I don't (very possible they were pre-formatted?).

Explorer does allow R/W, Mapsource doens't recorgnise the card for writing.

What filesystem is it formatted with? Anything other than a plain FAT
might cause problems.
Cheers,

I see! and you may want to check with www.garmin.com see if they have =
any
or newer driver for their USB cable. I have old Garmin StreetPilot III =
and
it does require USB driver from Garmin in order to transfer map to Data
card. And sometime it needs several tries for it to accept the card.
And MapSource has built-in auto-detect and it works quite well (not
perfect but got the map transferred after 3-4 tries).
