Garmin 310 problem
|

| Whilst travelling in the UK last month I purchased a Garmin Nuvi 310,
needing only the UK maps at the time.
On returning to Aus, when I could connect to my PC I discovered that
the 310 had a text to speech feature.
But when I go into the locale menu I have only the American/British
English to select from, and no TTS voices.
In the voices directory on the Nuvi there are no TTS voices either.
I installed the CityNavigator maps for Aust. but with no change.
Thinking that perhaps I needed to upgrade the Nuvi software I
downlaoded the WebUpdater from the Garmin website and ran it. It
updated my unit to version 4.10, but my Nuvi now tells me it's a Nuvi
300!
The latest software for the 310 is actually 3.10.
Two questions please, how can I get rid if V4.10 and upgrade to V3.10
and restore my Nuvi 310?
How do I access TTS?
Any suggestions appreciated.

| I understand that the Nuvi 300 does not have text to speech, whereas the
310 does. When you 'update' to the correct SW for the 310 (v3.10) you
may find that the text to speech voices are there.
If not let me know and I'll email them to you

| I can be even more helpful... If you use Garmin's "Webupdater" it checks
Garmin's supply for three updates. They are (in order):
1. Update for Webupdater,
2. Update for Firmware for Nuvi 310
3. Any other useful updates - including vehciles AND VOICES!!!
MY Nuvi 310 came with 2 of the TTS voices and numerous other non-TTS voice
versions. However you can download full TTS voice versions of ANY language
you like!!!
I have downloaded French as well, so that my wife can enjoy full directions
in that language :) Beware that the files are about 15MB for each full TTS
voice. (compared with only about 2MB for non-TTS voice)
Regards,
Martin

Thanks Quietguy and Martin.
I agree with what you say, but my main problem is that I cannot
upgrade/downgrade my SW from 4.10 to 3.10.
Is there a file on the Nuvi that I should trash so that it resets to
the 310 SW?
Thanks

| Download the firmware to a PC and run the program. It should do the update.
We never use Webupdater to change the firmware.

I've tried that, but SW v4.10 sticks, obviously can't/won't go
backwards. That's why I thought there might be a SW file to trash first.

| Getting in deep here, but you could have a look at the files on the Nuvi and try
some trashing, but.....
You have downloaded v3.10 and tried running that I presume, not just kept trying
the netupdater thing?
David
PS Sorry, but since finding out the voices are 15 megs or so I have to withdraw
my offer to email them as I am on dialup and my sessions wouldn't last long
enough to upload 15 megs

Stuffed if I know Martin,
I'll let it go for now I think and contact Garmin support during the week.
Thanks to all who have offered advise and suggestions.
Much appreciated.

Which perhaps explains why the 310, now being downgraded to a 300,
doesn't want to upgrade to being a 310 again, even if the firmware is
numerically lower.
How do the TTS come into this? As far as I understand, TTS is in the
350/360/660 only, not in the 300/310?

This has been pointed out to me, but in the users manual actually
loaded onto the 300/310?? that I have, it states that
"Languages noted with a persons name are text-to-speech (TTS) voices:
for example, American English-Jill is a text-to-speech voice. The
text-to-speech voices "read" and "speak" the same words that are
displayed on the nuvi. The voices have an extensive vocabulary, and
they pronounce the street names as you approach turns.
the pre-recorded voices have a limited vocabulary and do not speak
names of locations or streets."
The auto webupdater actually chose the nuvi 300 update, so, I guess
it's one of those strange inexplicable things that occur in life and I
now have a Nuvi 300.
Still does a bloody good job though.

TTS is in the Australian 310.

| TTS is in the 310 - one of the main reasons I chose to buy my 310.
I think you may be right about the his Nuvi now thinking it is a 300,
but I am not sure how he can fix that - of course he could always email
the shop in England where he bought it, or Garmin in the US if the local
blokes wont help

Is it possible to reformat the Nuvi HD and install the 310
software.....do you think?
Mike

| quietguy 2006-10-18, 4:33 am |
| I assume you are using 'HD' in a very casual sense, as the Nuvi doesn't have
a hard disk, it uses solid state memory which just appears as if it is a HD
But, re your question, I think you really need to talk to someone who KNOWS
what they are talking about before taking such a drastic step. I weould
think the fist thing to try now would be to phone Garmin in Australia and
talk to one of their guys. Worth a try at least.
I presume you know Garmin in Oz is handled by GME? You will find contact
info on www.gme.com.au (in the Garmin section)

Thanks David, I was really saying that a little "tounge in cheek" It
seems, from other posts, that only the Australian 310 have TTS, and the
fact I bought mine in the UK means that I may have to miss out on that
feature.
As nice as it might be, I can live without it, and bluetooth is of no
use to me, so I'll be happy with my 310/300 !
Thanks for all the suggestions guys, proves to me that these newsgroups
are worth their weight in gold.

1. Try the manual unit software update file for the Nuvi 310 rather than
using the WebUpdater to restore its Nuvi 310 status. After than you should
be Ok again.
2. Only the Australian/NZ Nuvi 310s have text to speech. US and European
units don't. I think the reasons is that Australia doesn't get the 350/360
models and without them they wouldn't otherwise have a TTS option in their
Nuvi range.
