I bought a Etrex Legend a few weeks ago and Mapsource Metroguide can not see
it. The GPS device works well and I connect it to a USB port with a USB to
serial port adaptator and, of course, the Garmin serial cable. The USB to RS
232 is correctly installed and configured as COM1, my PC runs with Windows
XP and when I try to transfer informations from or to my GPS with Mapsource,
the software doesn't find any device to make the transfer. anybody knows
this problem or, better, its solution ?

See if your hardware Profiles shows an extra 'ball mouse' and disable that.
Garmin's tech support suggested that and my Foretrex 201 talks to my
computer
just fine. It might take a few 'tries' to start the data transfer but now I
can
load my tracks onto Google Earth even. :-)

I've had this problem over the years with my vanilla Etrex.

A simple test to prove the cable is OK is.

Set the Etrex to 'NMEA OUT' protocol.

Startup Hyperterminal, I think is is under accesories, set it to COM1, with
the correct baud rate, you should see the NME strings, e.g. man readable
charaters. If the characters are unreadable, your baud rate is probably
wrong.

If this works your cable/setup is OK

Try connecting the GPS, turning the GPS on and rebooting your computer.
I dont know why this works, but if the GPS is on when the PC starts up,
the software can find it. This worked on my eTrek Venture.
