Author Options for Mounting GARMIN nuvi GPS
whypraty@gmail.com

Hi -
I have a nuvi 350 GPS unit (and love it!)

My windshield suction cup mount has gone bad (my nuvi falls every now
and then).--I would like to know the thoughts of experts in this
forum.--

I am thinking of the following options:

1. buy an accessory antenna, and mount the GPS somewhere around the
coffee holder. Thoughts on how to mount it?

2. buy a new suction cup mount ($30 + shipping)

3. buy a beanbag mount - i saw bad reviews about it.

Do options (1) and (2) make sense? Good places to buy? What are drivers
in CA doing where they cannot mount GPS on windshield?

TIA
Praty

eBay has the suction cup mount for about $19.85 + $7.95 S&H. Do a
Google search and you'll probably find them cheaper.

As for Ca not allowing mounts on the windshield, the only legal places
you can affix things to the windshield are a 7" square in the lower
right corner and a 5" square in the lower left.

Most of the mounted GPS units I've seen in California are in the
middle of the windshield under the mirror.

I have mine mounted at the top of the windshield, next to the mirror.
The only thing it blocks is my view of airplanes, just like my
flip-down sun visor does, although the sun visor obviously blocks more
of the windshield. In a chain up area north of Bishop I asked a CHP
officer about my GPS mount. He said as long as it doesn't block your
vision of the entire road way it shouldn't be a problem. YMMV.

A friend of mine removed his factory car stereo and put in a smaller
new one that left a 4" X 5" empty area under the new radio. He bought
a filler unit (plastic box, open at one end) to put in the space that
would normally end up as a little storage area under the radio but he
put it in backward with the solid part facing the passenger
compartment. He put his dash mount suction pad on it and it seems to
work pretty good with the unit about 8" below the dashboard. He uses
an external antenna. Whether or not he actually needs the antenna, I
don't know.

I use the provided disk to mount my nuvi on the dashboard top. I had
problems with it sticking to the windshield and reliably sticking to the
disk. The trick is to wet the suction cup. I lick my finger and then wet the
suction cup from the wet finger.

Thanks Dan and Skip -

I am launching a search for the round sticker - maybe that is a better
solution!

I will try wetting my finger, will post the results.

When my suction cup mount stopped working I called Garmin and they sent me a
new one.

I turn the mount upside down, attach the nuvi, and put it in my cup holder.
Holds it steady and easy to see.

I use a beanbag mount for my 2610 and have no problems at all as long as
your dash has a relatively flat surface.

Same here. A little saliva on the cup and it is much more secure than a dry
mount.

I bought a Vent Mount for my Nuvi 350, off of ebay.

I wonder how the Nuvi will handle the blast of hot air coming fromthe vent
when the heater is on

I attached the suction cup mount to the furnished circular plate which
fastens to the dashboard. If you don't want anything permanently attached
to the dash, you can get inexpensive temporary adhesive disks.
Advantages of the dash mount are:
1. The suction mount will last much longer since gravity is now assisting
instead of pulling it loose.
2. The unit is closer by, which aids touch screen operation, clarity of
spoken output, and legibility of the screen, which also gets less sun glare.

I do have more than 1 vent. Most people do. I just close that vent off.

If you saw the mount, you'd see that the Nuvi is not on the vent. It's
near it, but the part that actually holds the Nuvi is about 5 inches
away from the vent. It does stick out that much.

It may not be for everybody, but if a person can't live with 1 vent
closed off, then they should look for another mount, but it works great
for me. I'm going to buy another one for my other car.

The great thing about it, is that the mount stays on all the time. I
didn't leave my suction cup mount on all the time because heat on the
windshield from direct sunlight could ruin the rubber of the suction
cup, and thieves could easily see an empty suction cup mount (if I left
it attached).
With this mount attached to the vent, it's not easily noticeable, the
Nuvi is that much closer to me so it's easier to see and control, and
the best part is that the screen is almost always out of the direct
sunlight.

I know this from my suction cup radar detector mount, that sometimes the
suction cups could have a difficult time sticking in the winter, when
the windshield is really cold. Now, cold or hot, the vent mount will
always hold the Nuvi.

Your car must have better vents than mine - my vents (Toyota 4runner) do not
close off unfortunately hence the worry about what is a good idea
