basemap options on new GPS

| Hi there,
I live in the US and I'm looking at buying a Garmin 276C chartplotter
for my father who lives in New Zealand.
Can anyone tell me if the basemap will be automatically set to North
america if i buy it here, or will he be presented with a one time
choice of which region he wants when he sets it up?
Also, what detail/useability can i expect to get from a basemap?
streets? only major highways? any marine info?
If so, would i need to purchase more detailed New Zealand street and
marine maps anyway?
I guess my second question can be summed as: If I purchase the unit in
NZ with the nz basemap, am i going to have to purchase more detail
anyway, in which case I might as well just buy the USA version and just
get the extra street and marine detail to add to it.
