GTM 12 Traffic Receiver?
|
|
| Mike Henry 2006-11-08, 10:33 pm |
| Are there any GTM 12 opwners out there that would care to comment on how
well the receiver works, especially for auto-routing around traffic delays
or at least giving enough notice to do one's own mental re-routing?
In case it matters, I'm in the Chicago area, primarily concerned with the
suburban areas, and would be using it with a Nuvi 350.

It all depends on the traffic service available. If that's good, then
the GTM 12 works very well. I've used it with a N=FCvi 360. But I'm in
Sweden, where RDS-TMC has been active for a long time.

Thanks Anders - at least it sounds like the antenna may be decent.
Would anybody in Chicago care to comment on coverage?\

Well, I picked up a new GTM 12 over the weekend but am not hving much luck
with it. The Nuvi 350 detects it (traffic icon on main screen) but it
doesn't seem to be receiving any traffic info. The traffic screen says that
no subscription is detected, though it is supposed to come with a free
15-month subscription. Garmin tech support says that the GPS may need to be
powered up with the antenna connected for up to an hour before it will
receive broadcasts. It spent about 1/2 hour this morning and then again
this evening mostly on Interstates in the west suburban Chicago area with no
traffic info whatsoever, so I'm wondering if Garmin is feeding me a line.
Has anybody had better luck with this unit in the US?

| I thought you still had to subscribe to the service even with the free
subscription. Perhaps register is a better word.

| I thought of that and registered the unit with Garmin on the web site and
then started to go through the subscription process but stopped when it
looked like they were going to charge me for a new subscription. The
"manual" implies that you just plug and go. I'll try Garmin tech support
again today.

Hi Mike - I recently bought the GTM 12 for my new 2820 which I use
mainly in the New York area. Plugged in, turned on the GPS and as soon
as the satellites were locked on, the traffic reports came in. Works
fine in the NYC area, also took me on a detour when there was a
accident. Reports delays ahead, but sometimes its a little late on
reporting. The data is only as good as the data thats reported. Am
driving to Florida in February so that will be my big test.

Thanks for the reply - sounds like there is definitely a problem with my GPS
or antenna.
What version of the Nuvi software are you using? I'm at version 2.60 so
maybe that's the problem. I've been reluctant to upgrade to the more recent
versions because of problem reports with Web Updater.

| Thanks - I updated to the most recent version (4.2, I think). No problems
with the update but the GTM 12 is till non-functional and Garmin hasn't
replied to my email requesting assistance. Looks like another phone call is
in order.

| Why is the Garmin TMC unit twice the price of similar units for Tom Tom
and Navman? Does it have any additional functions?

I don't know why or even the price of the Tom Tom TMC. I paid $135 for the
GTM 12 and it's supposed to come with a 15-month complimentary subsrciption.
How does that compare to the others?

I have the GTM-11 and use the wire antenna coiled up in the lid of my
tank bag. At home (Winfield, IL) I barely get reception. As I head
toward the city, reception gets better.
IIRC, the subscription process was automatic. I plugged the antenna
into the 2720 and it just started using it. I suppose when my 15 months
is up, I'll have to resubscribe.
It will automatically route around traffic that it knows about when it
plans the route. Otherwise you have to touch a yellow diamond screen
icon that pops up and tell it to route around stuff that comes in after
the route is planned. If I'm using it on the way home, I just hit the
find button twice to cause it to recalculate a route home and then it
accommodates any traffic problems it knows about.
Friday I was heading home and had to put my foot down (riding a
motorcycle) on I-88 multiple times, traffic was so heavy. And yet,
there was no indication on screen. I'm not sure if the heavy traffic
just had not been reported or if I had already moved past the point
where I could receive.
HTH,

| Garmin tech support got back to me by email and seemed to think that the
complimentary subscription on this antenna was never activated. They
requested the unit ID and S/N, which was supplied in return email, but I
haven't heard back from them yet. My usage will be around the I-355
corridor and outlying areas so it sounds like reception could be a problem.
Does your system show the construction zone on I-88 near I-355?

I checked on the way in Wednesday and today. I briefly received traffic
information in my neighborhood one day but not the other. On both days,
I got information while inbound at about the location where the old
toll booth used to be - well past I-355.
> Does your system show the construction zone on I-88 near I-355?
No. And now you've got me wondering.
It appears that reception may be marginal in outlying areas. Perhaps
this would be improved by better antenna location.

Thanks Hank. It seems odd that the construction on I-88 wouldn't be
reported since it's been there at least 6 months. That doesn't bode too
well for the utility of the service.
Garmin thinks that I might have a defective GTM 12 and will be contacting me
by phone to try a few things and arrange a replacement if that doesn't work
out. I'm also getting a lot of interference on the car's FM radio until I
get in closer to Chicago. The radio interference disappears when the GTM 12
is removed from the Nuvi.
