Author REQUEST: Garmin Mapsource: City Navigator North America v8 keygen

Is there such a thing out there?

I would rather honestly try this out before I dropped $140 on the package.
Thanks in advance.

First off, I don't know where you're looking but it should
cost around $110.

Is there a keygen for it? Sure is, www.garmin.com

There is no way to "honestly" try it out ;)

Really, given the byzantine nature of the Garmin
unlock system, it's a major chore even after
you've paid for it!

I had a feeling that someone would put quotes around that word.
:)

If you buy the retail package you get full unlocks for two GPS
receivers. The street prices for CNNA 8 are more like $100 or so, try
checking Amazon or eBay.

If you want to get a feel for the detail you'll see you can do that with
the MapSource online map viewer for that product.

Yep, I agree! You have to type in the code, what a PITA.

Not all that easy if you have several versions and
have been through several updates and use multiple
GPSRs. Then the record keeping is a big PITA.

No comprendo... Garmin keeps track of you units and unlock
codes online. All you have to do is re-download them from
their site.

I'm obviously missing something I guess but in my experience
it's been extremely easy.

Is it safe to believe that buying this s/w from eBay will result in codes
that work? Anyone with positive experience buying software on eBay?

I purchased a 5 use version of QuickBooks Pro a few years back and it
came up okay. Look for a vendor with LOTS of feedback (2000 or so)
and above 99.5% positive with few recent negatives. Check out the
negatives and make sure they're not for illegal software.

It is easier now than it was 4-5 years ago when
the did not have an in-line tracking system. But
still more complex than needed.

Apples and oranges. I would never buy any Garmin

I would just not ever purchase software from eBay. It's too easily a
bootleggable item with a very high potential for the purchaser being
screwed.

I have bought all or most of the GPS software I buy on eBay. Look at
the seller's feedback profile and make a decision as to whether or not
it appears to be worth taking a chance. Also, look at the description
and ask questions if all is not clear. Things like:

1 - Is it in a sealed package?

2 - Does it have piece of paper with a unlock code or a unlock coupon
with it (if that is needed)?

3 - If an open package or "used" has it been previously unlocked?

When you find a seller with hundreds to thousands of sales and feedback
in the very high 90 percentile, you are at little risk. Always look at
the total cost with goods in hand, shipping charges can vary widely. I
bought City Navigator North America 8 from Amazon because their price
and free shipping worked out the best ($102).

I also have about six or seven older Garmin software packages and all of
them can be installed and looked at under MapSource. The details will
vary from version to version and some of the older version will have
trails and railroad tracks (or old abandoned railroad right of ways)
that are not on the newer versions.

Maps can be made from the older software and uploaded to a GPS of
waypoints can be placed and uploaded to place or locate features missing
from your newer software.

For street level details and for looking in POI for specific current
retailers or services, the more recent version of street and highway
mapping will almost always be best. But you can also use the older
versions to find the locations of POI that are no longer in the database.

Some people treat the older versions of Garmin's mapping data as if the
copyrights had expired or as if it were almost in the public domain.
The CD's are not copy protected, don't require unlocks, are not being
made any longer, not available for sale anywhere, etc., etc. So if
they give a copy to a friend or acquaintance they are, other than to the
letter of the law, not really committing much of a crime.

If I were Garmin I'd look the other way on it because I think that
almost anyone that gets an free copy for their older mapping will buy
the newer mapping eventually. Some of the older mapping will not
autoroute on the newer handhelds, some of it will. Mapping is mildly
addictive to that who get mildly addicted to GPS.

Most of that complexity comes from being allowed to unlock two GPSr's
per map product. They could greatly simplify things by removing that
luxury.

I'd rather live with the complexity.

I do live gladly with the complexity.

Thinking back, the comment I made was to someone
who wanted to bootleg an unlock, and I merely said
it was not so easy as just entering a code .. and
it is not.

That was me and I was able to download City Navigator from Emule and
paid $40 bucks for a unlock code. Wanted to go through Garmin but there
rates were unreasonable and not worth it. My bootleg versions worked
great and we never got lost in Europe.

Actually it doesn't need any honesty because

1. City Navigator's key will only work with specific unit #'s.

2. It costs $75 to upgrade from previous version to current

3. Nothing difference between newer and older besides some newer map and
block-size etc.. IOW, the requester can just try any older version, because
all Garmin's maps need to run from MapSource and it's free to all Garmin
users (or can be d/loaded from www.garmin.com).

4. If one wanna test the honesty then give Peer-1-Peer a try as I seen City
Navigator North American available on Peer-2-Peer.

Yup! there is some can crack just about all Garmin map's and s/he makes
them available to Garmin users. I do have 3 Garmin units but they are too
old (using 128M Data card) that I don't think newer City Navigator will be
any good to me, so I still using v4.01 came with the units.

I don't know how much Garmin charge European, but in North American they
charge $75. It's safer than paying $40 for illegal version.

Nope! I don't care if anyone uses legal or illegal, but $40 for the
illegal vs $75 for real thing is little high to me.

Well, your action likely costs us all. The more
who avoid paying Garmin (and they got none of your
$40), the more likely they are to raise the cost
to those of us who believe in obeying the law.

In the extreme, if all were so "clever" as you,
there would be no products for any of us to buy.

My thanks to you will be a place in my killfile.
