Topo CDs to Laptop

| Some time back, someone published the method to transfer the Garmin topo
files onto a laptop to avoid the annoying process of having to insert
the CDs while using the program. I've searched the messages and can not
find that process. Can someone re-publish that method. I believe it
requires certain files to be placed in a specific folder within the
Garmin folder but I do not remember which files or where to place them.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance

| There are two ways I know of.
1. Prior to the installation, copy the CD content to a folder on your
hard drive. Install from there. Now it will refer to that drive in the
future, for the files that are needed, and since the harddrive is there
all the time, no CD insertion is necessary.
2. After you already installed it, to use the CD: Change the record in
the Windows registry, that points to the CD drive, to refer to a folder
on the hard drive. Copy the required files to this folder.
Now I can't remember which record it was you should modify, and I don't
have any topo maps in this computer, but to anyone who is reasonably
qualified to fiddle with the registry, this should become obvious, when
you look into it.

Here is link to a forum with the instructions for editing the registry:
http://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/in...56entry997256
And the same link shortened:
http://tinyurl.com/y5n443
And here are the step by step instructions for the registry edit:
Sounds like you prefer to edit the registry then... No prob.
Close the MapSource program (if it's open)
Make a new folder in your C:\Garmin folder and name it "Topo"
CD 1 contains a folder named "West"
CD 2 contains a folder named "East"
CD 3 contains a folder named "Alaska" and a folder named "Hawaii"
Copy those folders into your "C:\Garmin\Topo" folder
Click your Windows Start button and select "Run"
Where it says "Open", type in "REGEDIT"
Click the "OK" button
Double-Click the folder "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE"
Click on the following plus signs in sequence"
+SOFTWARE
+Garmin
+MapSource
+Products
Click on the folder named "6", and then in the right window pane,
double-click the "Loc" registry key.
"D:\East" is displayed
Change that to read as:
C:\Garmin\Topo\East
Click the "OK" button
Click on the folder named "7", and then in the right window pane,
double-click the "Loc" registry key.
"D:\West" is displayed
Change that to read as:
C:\Garmin\Topo\West
Click the "OK" button
Click on the folder named "8", and then in the right window pane,
double-click the "Loc" registry key.
"D:\Hawaii" is displayed
Change that to read as:
C:\Garmin\Topo\Hawai
i
Click the "OK" button
Click on the folder named "9", and then in the right window pane,
double-click the "Loc" registry key.
"D:\Alaska" is displayed
Change that to read as:
C:\Garmin\Topo\Alask
a
Click the "OK" button
Close the Registry Editor window
Open MapSource
Your Topo maps should now open without the CDs!!!
