Author 76c TracBack function questions

Hi all,

I'm having a hard time figuring out the TracBack function on my GPSMAP
76c. I just upgraded about a month ago from a GPSMAP 76 that I bought
when they first came out about 5 years ago. On the 76 you hit tracback
on a saved track and it started navigating back to where you started
using the saved track. On the 76c it says "select the point you want to
tracback to" (which is very awkward to do).

I use this function mainly off-road because my CN8 does my street work
for me. Turning off CN8 and turning on the topo maps when I do select
a point to tracback to it says "Route calculation error no roads near
starting point".

By upgrading have I just lost one of my most used functions??? I have
version 4.10 in the 76c. Does this work the same way in the cx??? Why
would they change that, it's pretty straight forward tracback means you
follow your TRACK back not the roads. Am I doing something wrong?
Sorry for the rant...

Thanks for any help,
Frank

I forgot to include this in my rant. When I save a track now it asks
if I want to save the whole track, if you tell it no it asks you to
select a point to save to. The 76 gave you options like save back to
3pm, noon, yesterday, I miss that too. I do a lot of fishing and
hunting and the track function as it worked in the 76 was a valuable
tool, now I feel it's unusable.

Thanks again,
Frank

On your 76 x series turn on the undocumented daily track feature.
Connect to PC via USB
Track Page
Setup
Datacard Setup
Tick box

A .gpx track file will be created each day named e.g. 20061231.gpx

To access
Menu twice
Setup
Interface
USB Mass storage

The GPS will then appear as a removeable device. Open the file in
MapSource or a gpx program.

To return GPS to normal one short press of on/off button.

This was introduced in a software update so may not appear in a new
unit.

Thanks Ted,

I have a 76c not the 76cx, it doesn't have the expandable memory (wish
I could have gone with the x series but couldn't pass up the deal on
this c). Will your 76cx follow a track? I haven't finished all the
testing on my 76c but it appears that when off-road it will not follow
a track instead it just gives you a straight line to the point you
selected to tracback to. I thought this might have been due to the
maps I have loaded but I turned off all the maps and it still does it.

Thanks,
Frank

I have a 60CSx but the operation is the same. The saved daily .gpx
track file is for PC viewing only. These files can only be listed and
deleted on the GPS.
If you go to to the Track page and the TrackBack button a map appears
allowing you to chose your starting back point. I would have thought a
"track back from here" would have been the most useful, as the early
Etrex had.

Is it not asking if you want a Follow Road or Off Road route?

If not, you may have the default Guidance Method set to Follow Roads and
to not ask each time a route is activated.

You can change that behavior from settings in the Routing menu accessed
from the Setup Menu. If you want to use both Follow Road and Off Road
routes regularly, it is best to have the Guidance Method set to Prompted
and it will ask each time, remembering the last choice used. That means
you'll have a one or two extra keystrokes to activate a route.

Thanks Jack,

That was it. It set to "follow road", changed it to "prompt" did a
tracback, selected follow track and it worked. I saw that option as I
was looking through the pages when I first received it but forgot
about.

Thanks again,

Frank
