I just want to share my joy with you all. Last weekend, I slipped down
a few carpeted stairs in my house while carrying my eTrex Legend
(original - not color). The unit slipped out of my hand, landed on a
carpeted step (maybe a step or two below my feet), then fell a few more
steps to a tile floor. No visible damage, but it wouldn't power up. I
emailed Garmin to find out the cost of an out-of-warranty repair (since
it is 5 years old), then found the info on their site before they got
back to me - $99. But then they emailed me with a WRMA number and said
send it in (no mention of cost). I confirmed that they knew it was out
of warranty, and the customer service rep said, "I have deemed the
repair under warranty for you, even though you are beyond the one year
warranty. The only expense you will incur is the shipping expense to
us." Cool! Maybe it's because on their website they have testimonials
where a unit flew off someone's motorcycle at 90 mph and still worked,
so maybe they think a few steps (first one being carpeted) shouldn't
kill it.

Even if I had to replace it, I would have bought the exact same model.
I don't think the color screen is worth the extra money (and isn't the
color screen smaller? And wouldn't a color screen use up batteries
faster?).

It could be because they wanted to see what broke, so that they can
make the new ones better (assuming you told them how it broke).
