76CSx... Why does it care what type of batteries are used?

| The menu offers Alkaline, NiMH, or Lithium Ion.
Why does it care, as long as it's getting its 3 volts of juice?
Unfortunately, the manual doesn't explain why it matters.
The overpriced NiMH battery kit Garmin sells for this unit comes with a
charger, and neither of the A/C adapters say anything about charging NiMH
while they're in the unit. So, I assume that the setting isn't to allow
recharging while in the unit.
So... why the different settings?

Maybe so the battery charge scale reads right.

| Pretty simple.
Alkaline are rated at 1.5 volts and rechargeable are 1.2 volts. I don't
think it matters to the unit iteslf too much except for the battery
charge indicator. It would be misleading if it relied on what it
perceived to be a lower output for the recghargeables.
