Author Basemap influence on downloaded maps, (or buying a US GPS rather

If I buy a map of the UK roads (this is specifically aimed at Garmin)
will it make a difference if I load it on to a US basemap or a UK
basemap? This, of course, leads to the question: can I save money by
buying a US sourced GPS rather than a UK one. What are the
disadvantages if any? Anybody out there done this?

Kratos.

IMHO, the only difference is the basemap (UK <--> US).
