VERY UPSET - eTrex Vista C owner
|
|
| wildkatzman 2006-01-15, 11:48 pm |
| The end of last year, before I purchased my eTrex Vista C, I contacted
Garmin.
I clearly stated/asked that I would purchasing one of their GPS units.
I needed them to confirm before my purchase that they would NOT
be putting removable data cards into their unit(eTrax Vista C) anytime
in the near future because I would wait, I needed more memory in this unit.
I was reassured !!!!! by "tech support" via-e-mail and I quote...
> Garmin does not put removable data cards into there Handheld GPS
> unit because it seriously compromises the durability of the unit.
I am sure at this time, they knew the new version of this unit was on the
way.
I would like to contact someone of AUTHORITY at garmin about this matter.
I spent a good about of money for this unit, and would simply an exchange.
I wouldn't be so upset if I didn't get this info straight from garmin staff.
I can also forward the e-mail to prove what I was told, just to get me
to go ahead and purchase the current eTrax unit last year.
Can anyone give me any upper managements e-mail addresses so I can address
this matter?
I would be fine with an exchange. I am very upset be cause I felt mislead.
Thank you in advance

I doubt if you'll find that address. I also will say that
most likely the person on the phone was unaware of any new
product offerings. That information isn't widely available
to those other than in marketing. Assuming you have the
email (and no, I don't need to see it) from Garmin, I'd
think all that it would take would be a phone call and
request to speak to a manager to clear the situation up.
But, I've been wrong before. ;-)

Which year was that? At the end of 2005 there were msgs re the various
Cx versions at the relevant newsgroups. And at the end of 2004 I can
believe Garmin tech support knew nothing of them.

| Not to mention the fact that their reps probably can't talk about units
that have not been released.

Oh my Dear XXXXing GOD! YOU GOT A REMOVABLE DATA CARD IN YOUIR GPS!! DEAR
GOD HOW CAN YOIU BEAR THE PAIN??? Uou need to immediately contact the DSA,
FBI, NSA, NSI, FDC, and probably, for good masure, the DDC. AND FOFR GODS
SAKES DONT USE THE REMOVALBEL DATGA CARD BECAUSE IT WILL CORRUPT YOUR IVING
SOUL!!!! and don't forget to keep your batteries charged...

| Its highly unlikely that any manufacturer would make a new product
announcement so far ahead so as to derail sales of the existing
products. I really do believe that prerelease information about the x
series units was unintentional and not in their marketing department's
plans.

Read it again; he's upset because he ->didn't get a removable memory
card in his receiver.
The person he talked to told him that there were no receivers coming
that would have expandable memory, so he might as well buy now.
So, he buys and then shortly Garmin releases the "x" series receivers
with expandable memory.

It's not very clear what you stated/asked. And how would a tech
support drone speak to what the company might do in the future?
> I was reassured !!!!! by "tech support" via-e-mail and I quote...
The quote doesn't appear to be authentic. Anyway, it was (then)
present tense while your stated/asked was future tense. The answer
doesn't match the question.

Interesting...how are you sure?

| I also had the opportunity to hear a Bass Pro Shop salesman
say that he has talked to a Garmin Rep and he was "assured"
that Garmin wouldn't be putting data cards in their units.
Also note: when I responded(twice) to tech supports claims that putting
a data card in the units would compromise the durability and
asked for details/explanation my e-mails were not returned.

Why the hell are so many people attacking this poor guy? He has a valid
complaint against Garmin. He asked a straight question "Is Garmin intending
to release hand held receivers with removable data cards?" making clear that
his decision when to purchase would be based upon the response and was given
a straight answer "NO" by both a retailer quoting a Garmin rep and Garmin
support staff. Clearly the Garmin employee was out of order to answer in
this way and should have stated that he was not in a position to comment on
future product specifications. However he did make a statement that turned
out to be untrue and hence Garmin are guilty of misselling. The Garmin
support employee was acting officially on behalf of the company and so
Garmin is liable for the accuracy of all statements that he makes. Garmin
should accept return of the mis-sold goods and take appropriate disciplinary
or re-training action against the support employee.

Generally such issues are settled in the courts. Whether the employee
should or should not have known something is a matter of when it
happened. When issues like this come up they just result in companies
and their distributors shutting down all communication .. and rightly so.

So .. he should act on it, rather than telling us he is "very upset".
Continual whining here will acheive nothing. If he has a legal case, he
should go for it. You can volunteer to help.

What have Garmin said since you made your complaint?
I'd have thought they'd offer to exchange units.

I imagine he was interested in finding out if anyone else had been bitten
and managed to sort out a settlement and perhaps canvassing opinion if it
would be worth him taking it further. I don't see how that constitutes
whining, you unsympathetic bastard! ;-)

Actually - re-reading the original post, he was simply trying to find a
suitable email address so that he COULD take it further - seems a perfectly
reasonable request!

Generally such issues never reach the courts - usually the company concerned
admits that there has been a mistake and offers a reasonable settlement in
the interests of good customer relations. In this case I would expect
Garmin to offer to take the receiver back in part exchange for the new "x"
model. However that will require getting through as far as someone with
responsibility and authority so the OP should try to find out where in the
Garmin organisation he should direct his problem. Oh - wait a minute - that
what he was asking in the first place, wasn't it?

Hard to be sympathetic when the information he says he was missing "at
the end of last year" was posted here for all to read.

Not at all quaint - I thought that it was a pretty good description of his
attitude (even without the smiley!) However he's saved me the bother of
replying to his other comments!

| You know, I just want to Thank "David Lee" for sticking up for me.
I wrote to this group for input/support... nothing more.
If you can't say something nice, be positive, or share some useful
information,
Why make comments at all? It makes me sorry I even asked for support.
I really didn't think I was asking for much. I certainly don't need or want
sympathy.
Just stated my issue to this group and asked for good e-mail contact at
garmin.
I love garmin products. Feeling mislead by garmin reps - is what upset me.
I also know, if I contact the right person at garmin this issue would be
resolved
in a matter of minutes, instead of jumping from person to person to
person......
I would be happy with a simple exchange.
I all want is to contact the right person to make it happen.

| You could just sell your almost new GPS on Ebay.
Then if you shop around, could probably get the model you want for just
a few dollars more.
It's kind of how I felt when my Garmin Quest was stolen. Better to eat
the loss, buy a new one than to stress about it.
Cheers

| Wow. Thank god I came to this discussion late.
Hey wildkatzman, I understand how you feel. I couldn't find any email
contact information, but I did find the name of the marketing and sales
director on Hoover's: Gary V. Kelley. Here's their front desk number
913-397-8200.
Good luck in getting the new unit, bud. I just got a 76csx to replace
my old and tired 76cs, and the new units are great. Keep us posted
about how it goes.
