Author Compass and altitude sensor? 60cx versus 60csx.

Hi all,

Questions for owners of the 60cs and 76cs:

Do you find the compass and altitude sensor useful? If you were to buy
another gps, would you insist on having these two features.

Thanks,
Sam

I have the 60CS and I have never needed the altimeter but I use the
compass on every geocache I hunt. With the compass turned on and on
the compass page, the arrow points straight at the geocache no matter
whether you are moving or not and show how far you are from the cache.
My only complaint is it seems to need to be calibrated a little too
often but that only takes 2 turns of your body.

I am interested in my rate of ascent/descent as a climber so its a feature I
use a lot. As with Ron, the compass is fab for Geocaching.

I used the barometer to predict the weather in western Antarctica for a
couple of months on my old 76S. There wasn't any 10 o'clock weather report
to tune into out there. :) I've purchased two Vistas (C and Cx) and a 76CS
since then probably 'just because'. It sure would be nice to access the GPS
elevation on those units (i.e. have them in the list of selectable data
fields).

I don't think I've ever used the compass. It's too erratic and easily
fooled for what I would need to use it for (installing seismometers).

Since both the compass and altimeter are electronic, how accurate are
they?

Which units have the barometer?

The "S" units have the compass and barometer. S == Sensors. 76S 76CS,
60S, 60CS and "Vista" models.

You can make the compass read 5-10 degrees off (or more) just by tilting the
unit slightly from the angle it was held when it was calibrated. If you
tilt it too much a "Hold Level" message will pop up, but the reading will be
off before that happens. The compass has to be calibrated every time you
replace the batteries.

Since the barometer is calibrated by the GPS elevation it gets to be pretty
accurate as long as you aren't in a pressurized plane or in a car with the
windows rolled up (making it slightly pressurized when going fast down the
road).
