Garmin eTrex (Yellow) Packaging
|

| I am planning to buy one. Here in Toronto, I have seen the Garmin eTrex
(yellow) come in two types of packaging, one in a cardboard box with a front
window with the eTrex behind a plastic cover, and another type which the
unit is just in a blister pack with no box.
Does anyone know the difference between the two? I heard the boxed one is a
European version and the other is US version? I doubt it, but I also heard
that the blister packed one is refurbished. How is packaged in the US?
- Thanks

I'm not sure what the difference would be between a European and US
version, since they can't hold any maps at all. The same satellites
orbit everywhere. If one is refurbished, then it should be cheaper, and
probably a good buy, since it will have the same warranty as a new unit.
I doubt that refurbished units are being sold as new, though. I suspect
it's just different packaging. I see changes in packaging all the time
in all sorts of products, as the marketing idiots try to find new ways to
tempt buyers.

I just bought a yellow eTrex brand new in Field & Trek and it's in a
heat-sealed "blister" pack. I'm not sure why there would be UK- and
US-specific models but mine came with two stickers: "Warning! This product
contains lead, a chemical known to the State of California to cause
cancer..." and "Ordnance Survey maps on your PC for fast and simple GPS
route planning".
So hoo nose...

| I just bought the plastic pack with no box. It's so difficult to open
those, even with scissors!
Anyway, I think the difference might be that it's an updated version.
The sheet says '2000-2005 Garmin...' The firmware on the device also
says 2005, version 3.3, the newest.
If I'm not mistaken, I do remember seeing the boxed version and it says
2001 on the info sheet. That's not to say though that the actual thing
really contains an older firmware; we don't know.
There're 2 versions of the eTrex...

I suppose if one sees a '2005' on the info sheet, it should contain the
latest batch.
