Fixing Vista display
|
|
|
| Once again my Vista (non color) display is showing signs of
deterioration.
Occasionally, horizontal lines appear across the screen or it start to
loose pixels, or the display washes out completely. The unit is out of
warranty and Garmin wants $125 to fix it. They did repair it a year or
so ago for the same symptoms.
Does anyone know what the problem is? Is it user repairable? If I break
it, so be it. It just sits in a drawer right now anyway.
I really don't use it any more, having bought a 76CS a while back. I
would however like to eBay it, but I'm not about to invest $125 to do
so.

| My Legend did the same thing a while back, but after dropping it about
4 feet onto concrete it started working properly again.
Apparently the ribbon cable that connects the LCD to the circuit board
can develop a bad connection, here's a PDF showing how to open the GPS
up if you feel brave enough to try:

Sounds like dropping it 4 ft onto concrete would be easier to do :)

Rotareneg,
Well, thank you very much for the excellent instructions. What did you
use for an adhesive to reattach the rubber band?
I will try it tomorrow. Nothing to loose - I don't use it any more and
can't sell it in its present condition.

| Those aren't my instructions, found them over at the Geocaching.com
forums: http://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/in...howtopic=118839
RTV silicone rubber is what I'd try first. Some kinds of RTV silicone
give off acetic acid as they set, so you want to be sure it's not one
of those (it's pretty obvious by the smell.) Permatex Ultra Blue is
fine, and you can get it virtually anywhere.
