I've just bought the Automotive navigation Kit for my GPS which
includes
City Select Europe, that turns out to be V6.
Is far as I can see on the Garmin web site, I'm entitled to a free
upgrade
to V7.
I've contacted Garmin using their upgradeoffer.europe@garmin.com email
and
had the auto response email returned but heard nothing further.
Although
I've opened the package I haven't installed or registered the software
yet.

Firstly.. how long does Garmin normally take to respond to upgrade
requests,
should I be worried after a few days?

Secondly.. there is talk of V8 coming out! If it is coming out shortly,
and
I wait until it is released before registering V6, will I be entitled
to an
upgrade to V8?

Thirdly.. am I risking anything by not registering?

Hi there,

It seems we've both done the same thing, except I DID unlock my CSEv6.
And I'm still waiting for the upgrade disk. Whether it will be v7 or
City Navigator v8 is another thing. The guys at Garmin UK told me that
it will ship within a couple of weeks. And they insisted that it will
be City Select v8, but previously released information about dropping
the CS line altogether in favour of City Navigator. And they said
they'd be shipping that to me free, INSTEAD of v7. Don't really know
what to think now... Especially that they haven't really gotten back to
me since...

Let me know if you hear any news!

Garmin have just announced CN Europe v8, and it does replace City
Select. Release date 1st Jan 2006 - ship date 25th Feb

Oooh, thats cool! That means I really am entitled to a free update!
Just one more thing, though, does CNv8 have smaller size tiles than v7?
I'd like to use it in my gpsmap60 with 24MB memory...

Check out the Garmin mapviewer. The tiles look big for the area I'm
interested in, namely, Spain; also there is more detailed coverage
there. I think the limited memory of my GPS V has finally been
overcome, and will have to be limited to hiking use. Consequently, I'll
have to investigate a new unit for car use - such is technical
progress, I guess.

Further to the above - I've checked with Garmin sales support, and my
local area of SE Spain was made up of 5 tiles=10.6mb with City Select
v7; with City Nav v8 it's one tile=16.1mb. As noted previously, the
effect is exaggerated in Spain because of the increased coverage, but
the GPS V could only accept one tile. Even a long journey in Europe
with the Quest would mean taking a laptop to reload maps a couple of
times a day. Thanks Garmin.

Wise of them to announce it AFTER they start shipping it.

I received City Select NA update disk in the mail yesterday .. but it
was V.7 not V.8 .. and likely I will not update it, since I am now using
City Nav 7 in my 60Cx and SP-III.

Looks like they may be focusing on the the newer 'x' products where
memory can grow to at least 512M with appropriate MicroSD cards.

As soon as my CNv8 disk comes in, we can swap. If the map tiles are
that big, they won't fit in my 24MB memory. I will be interested in
CSv7 then, which they don't ship anymore, because CN replaced CS. As
Sierra said: thanks Garmin!

Well V8 has come out, in City Navigator form anyway.
So I registered my V6 copy of City Select and I was entitled to the
City Navigator V8 update DVD, which arrived in the post this morning
(Sat.4th), it came very quickly only rang on Thursday afternoon.
I've installed the update but it says that the "maps details locked".
Unfortunatly Garmin's helpline isn't manned at the weekends so I can't
find an answer form them.
The Unlock code I have for City Select doesn't seem to work.... has
anyone got a solution?

IIRC the website gives you the "free" update code (its a XXXXX working
around their horrendous lock shit IMO, and I had a similar problem)

During the install process, there`s a button that appears as part of
the installer with "help" on it IIRC, the only way I got around it
after several attempts at reinstalling was to use it - it then took me
to the gar(min)bage site and told me the new unlock code.

Good luck !

Thanks Colin
Went through the install process one more time and this time the unlock
wizard worked, I selected the "No, I need to get a 25-character unlock
code for the Update CD".
A couple of previous times the 'unlock wizard "crashed" prompting me to
re-install it and try again.
Now up and running.
Very pleased, but boy, those map sets are big, lets hope I never travel
too far from home!

Hi Adam,

Just how big are they, exactly? Say, the London area or
Gloucestershire? Right now it's a load of maps about 2MB each. How big
are the new ones?

Thanks,
Chris

First open the following Garmin page so you can see what I'm referring
to...
http://www.garmin.com/cgi-bin/mapge...=254&smap.y=194

The central strip covering most of London is 14.4Mb
The eastern square covering eastern London is 10.6Mb I would say you
need both of these, thats 25.1Mb
The western square, which only has a tiny bit of the M25 on is 9.74Mb

The junction between the Central strip and the eastern block can be
seen here...
http://www.garmin.com/cgi-bin/mapge...=243&smap.y=178

The junction between the Central strip and the western block can be
seen here...
http://www.garmin.com/cgi-bin/mapge...0&rz=0&k=1&sc=1
so I would say you would only need this block if you wanted the whole
loop of the M25

Again open..
http://www.garmin.com/cgi-bin/mapge...0&rz=0&k=1&sc=1

The tile with Gloucester in is 11.8Mb
The tile with Hereford in is 7.2Mb
The tile with Swindon in is 9.74Mb
The tile with East Birmingham in is 11.2Mb

Well, that probably does it then: I need a new receiver...
It seems not even London will fit in, so a drive to Gloucestershire
from London is out of the question.
What a nice way to suck money out of customers!
I'll probably go for a PPC with SiRF and Garmin Que, since I don't plan
on giving any more of my money to Garmin, although I really like my
gpsmap60...

THanks for the info, really helpful!
