Easy way to turn tracks into maps?

Folks,

it has been a few years that I looked inot making own Garmin maps... I
was wondering if the technology has advanced and software is easier to
use (as back then)?

I am looking for a way to turn tracks into transparent maps that can be
overlayed over the regular mapsource maps ..

Is there a fairly automated way for that?
