Not really sure what to call this problem.

Someone else pointed out that if you are viewing CityNav data on your
handheld, you do not see any topo information. I just got CityNav 7 and can
confirm this. Maybe I'm not looking in the right place in the manual or in
the setups, but is there a way to switch back and forth between the two map
sets?

I can see using CityNav to plan a trip to another, distant, location. Once
there, I'd like to do some geocaching. For the long drive, the CityNav maps
are fine as the car is going to do the climbing, not me. Once I get ready to
go hiking / caching, I want the topo info, so I can look for a nice route,
be aware of steep sections, etc.

For now, I'm solving this by switching out the MicroSD cards. I'm keeping
topo only info on the smaller 32 MB unit that came with the Vista Cx and
loading CityNav info onto a recently purchased 512 MB MicroSD. (Not strictly
germane to this, I got tired of waiting for the 1 GB MicroSD to become
available and needed / wanted the additional memory NOW) If there is no way
to switch displays, I can see acquiring another MicroSD to keep more topo
map info on. Then I can slip in the card with the information appropriate to
what I'm doing. Topo maps seem small enough that I'll probably hit the
segment limit restriction before I hit the card's memory limit.

Find the map setup menu or mapsource setup menu (on the map page) and
the 'i' (information) display. With that displayed, you can uncheck map
sets to make them not display.

Thank you, Phil!

This actually solved two problems for me. I don't know what I did, but
suddenly I was displaying only only the base map, no topo or CityNav. This
after updated my mapsets to include city maps for an out-of-town trip I'm
taking. I downloaded everything to the MicroSD, all 250+ MB, and all I had
was basemaps and waypoints showing! Everything is now restored.

I guess your knowing what to do is the difference between a veteran and a
newbie. It is also helpful to always remember the first rule of survival:
Don't panic!

Great! I was guessing based on my SP-III and 60Cx :)

That was me and this is an ongoing problem not specific to this model.
I had this problem 5 to7 years ago on my GPS III+ and the problem is
still true today on my Ique 3600.

The difference is the poorly defined user interface on the cx which
has menus inside of menus and you have to remember where they all are.
And to make it worse, they didn't bother to document it. I did call
them on it and explained that on the ique there was an easy way to
turn topo on and off and city select on and off. Could it be done on
the cx (otherwise with 512 mb there were a few hundred maps).

The good news is yes - same functionality on the cx but you have to
know where it is and when to hit that menu key.

Here is what you do.

1. Go to the setup menu
2. Choose map
3. Move over to the information icon (since the menu button will do
different things depending on which icon you are on). This is the
icon which displays which maps you have loaded and whether they are
currently on or off.
4. Hit the menu key - VOILA!

Now that was obvious! <grin>

The menu will allow you to show or hide any of your loaded map groups
(like topo or city select) and even show or hite the basemap, all, or
none.

Just remember to load everything but if you have any overlapping maps,
just show one set at a time.

Joel

P.S. - By the way, I purchased my Vista CX on ebay for $315 and when I
was on the phone Garmin person told that the unit is brand new and for
the first year they will honor the warantee (now that may or may not
be true but that is what he told me). Now the other beauty is that
the CX duplicated two GPS's I had (III+ and 12) and a Suunto alimeter
watch. So I sold on ebay all my duplicated equipment (+ two cheap
polar heart rate watches and an old tranmitter belt) and the net
proceeds were $217. Now I was not planning on ever using any of that
again. So the net effect was that my Vista CX ended up costing me $97
new.

By the way, since my Suunto had a temp sensor, I decided to purchase
something for that with small redundancy. Purchased the Highgear
Terratech for about $30 which included a compass, led light, temp
sensor, and watch. Pretty small and I am happy with it. I can now
hike with it instead of a watch and have a second compass + temp +
emergency integrated light.

Good deal on your Vista Cx! I had nothing to sell / trade in, but I'm still
very happy with this as my first GPS. Heading out of town to the desert
country and will be using the Vista for both geocaching and assisted urban
navigation. It's been a while since I was in Las Vegas and I hear it's grown
a lot, even since the last time I was there four years ago. I'm looking
forward to the unrestricted satellite reception the desert offers as opposed
to the tree cover where I usually hike / cache.
