Help with GPS Waypoints and Routes

| Hi all,
I am trying to do GPS waypoint navigation and am using a Garmin eTrex
Vista:
http://www.garmin.com/products/etrexVista/
Basically, I am trying to create a route of waypoints (e.g. 01-02-03)
and have the GPS device navigate me through the route. That is, it
should tell me to go to waypoint 1, then to waypoint 2, and finally to
waypoint 3 (assuming I start off closest to waypoint 1). However, when
I program the route into the GPS receiver and then select "Navigate",
it ALWAYS directs me towards the last waypoint in the route. That is,
if my route is 01-02-03 and I am closest to waypoint 1, it will
completely bypass waypoints 1 & 2 and direct me towards 3.
Can anyone help me with this? Do I have a defective GPS module or am I
doing something wrong?
Thanks in advance!

Go to the Main Menu screen.
Select Routes
You should see a list of routes you have created (at least one!). And
if you select it, the Waypoints on the route should be listed in order.
At the bottom of the screen select Navigate.
Is this what you are doing?
BTW .. on a route I believe it will assume you are at Wpt 1 when you
start and the first leg will be 01-02.

Very odd. I have an old eTrex Legend. I created a route including a
few local cities and it seems to behave as it should (did not hike the
route, though .. it would be very long!)

| When you started your route, what was your position relative to waypoints
1,2 and 3? If you were closer to 3 than 2, or between 2 and 3, the gps
might have "decided" that you had already completed the 1-2 leg, and were
ready to go to 3. As Phil pointed out Garmin units generally assume that
you are starting at 1 and will show 2 as the first destination, but I have
observed my Garmins chosing a waypoint after 2 under certain conditions.
