Author GPS II+ error message

We used to get decent Garmin support from GME here in Australia, but they have
dumbed it down to the point where you can't even get a sensible answer any more.

This unit will sit for many hours and then suddenly lose the plot entirely and
present the message: "Power down and re-init". After a re-init, it will usually
repeat that result.

All GME can say is "we can sell you a refurb unit". May be relevant, but not
really an answer to the question though.

So - does anyone know the actual cause of the message ?

No, that has its own specific alarm message; something like "Low Memory
Battery."

AFAIK, the "Power down and re-initialize" warning is kind of a
catch-all for situations where the firmware doesn't know what to do.
For example if the calculated position is clearly impossible or there's
some other inconsistency in the data seen by the firmware.[color=darkred]

It is running v3.03 firmware which is the latest. Just to rule out firmware
corruption, I reloaded 3.03 and the behaviour is the same.

Sometimes when it displays the message the altitude shows as >10,000m or
<-1,000m. I am at +300m so clearly the processing is producing wacky results,
yet the sat screen shows solid bars of decent strength on four or more SV's.

Other times, SV signals are good, coords and altitude are within 20m yet this
message appears.

Tried a hard reset, but no difference.
