Author 2720 Maps

I am what I'd consider a veteran user of an SP-III, of which I was an early
adopter (upgrading from the first monochrome StreetPilot). It has routed me
faithfully through virtually every mainland state in the USA.

I've now ordered a 2720 as an upgrade and am wondering how the maps work. I
know it's pre-loaded with CN 7 NT, but what about when CN 8 is released this
summer? Are maps transferred directly to the unit in a similar fashion to
the way I now transfer maps to my USB loader for the SP-III?

TIA

p.s. Wanted a 2730 but my 1500cc Gold Wing audio system doesn't support all
the XM functions (radio, traffic, weather) without going through a lot more
hassle than I'm willing to go through. Guess the 2730 or equivalent will
wait until I upgrade my motorycle as well :-)

It's assumed that it will be similar to the 2620: an update DVD is used to
update the maps via the USB connection.

Why would it need to do that? The 2730's XM stuff is built-in/integrated.
You don't need external hookups except the audio.

Because as a motorcyclist I need GPS annunciation, XM program material,
between-headset communication, and Honda CB/AM-FM Radio/CD Player/Cassette
all in my helmet headset. And they have to be polite to each other -- so
that a GPS annunciation, for example, mutes other programs so I can hear the
GPS. And when my wife annunciates :-) the same thing needs to happen. An
incoming CB transmission trumps everything else and takes priority. It's
pretty complicated and requires separate audio inputs for different programs
to accomplish all this in an audio system that outputs to a helmet headset.
To do this, a motorcyclist often buys a pre-configured wiring interface
harness (for example, www.cellset.com) that connects all these components
properly together into the motorcycle's intercom/audio system. The newer
1800cc Gold Wing supports these multiple features, but the older 1500cc
model like mine does not. That's why I opted for the 2720. (If you go to
any of the combination packages for sale on motorcycle websites (like
www.cyclegadgets.com), you will see this reflected in the packages: 2720
for the older bike, 2730 for the newer one.)

I see. Well, the 2730 probably won't work for you, as you say, but not
because of some limitation in your bike's audio system. The 2730 isn't
capable of "splitting" the various audio sources: they all go into the
same line/headphones out jack.

Hello Jim and others on the list..
I have a Garmin2730, just got it yesterday and I also have a GL1800 (2003).
I got all the mounting stuff from CycleGagdet or whatever its called and
because of the mp3 player and xm radio stuff - none of the audio works in
the 2730 can go through to your helmet. Instead it goes directly into your
motorcycle speakers so your normal audio stuff for the helmet remains
unchanged. I guess with the xm and mp3 stuff it broadcasts its audio via FM
through your FM radio (I presume) and that works really well in the car.
You just look for a clear FM frequency and than tell the 2730 what that freq
is, and bingo! all your mp3 music and travell comments go through the car
radio.

I presume it will work the same on the bike and if it does I will be happy
with that.

I am still waiting for the cycle-gadgets stuff to get here though, so will
see what that looks like..

But - I have a question. I can upload all kinds of mp3 files to the 2730
but how to you upload map information that I have from my Rand McNally
software? I can't seem to find a way to do that yet, or I don't know what
part of Rand McNally stuff that I should be uploading.

I am trying to learn about all this stuff as fast as I can..

As nearly as I can tell by comparing the 2720 and 2730 on the Garmin
comparison website, the 2730 has a separate audio output for the MP3 and XM
stuff, which is why it has full functionality on the GL1800 (yours) and not
the GL1500 (mine).

But... I'm pretty sure the XM and MP3 audio can be sent to your helmet
headset using the Cellset harness that you probably got from CycleGadgets
(they sell the whole thing as a kit), because unlike the GL1500, the GL1800
has numerous AUX inputs that can be routed through the speakers or the
headset. I talked to a friend who has one set up on a GL1800 and I'm
virtually certain he gets all the program material in his headset. I will
double check with the guy.

It's not a separate audio output for XM/MP3. It's just an audio out.
All audio, both the voice instructions and the media player (MP3, XM,
or audiobook player) goes through it. It mutes the media player when
providing voice instructions.

I confirmed with my friend riding a Gold Wing 1800 that all program material
can indeed be assigned to either the speakers or the headsets using one of
the switches on the motorcycle (not the 2730), including all the output from
the 2730 (GPS annunciation, XM, XM-traffic, MP3). With the proper wiring
harness you do not an FM modulator and you can listen to all your stuff in
your headset. See www.cellset.com. If you bought a kit from
www.cyclegadgets.com you will be fine (their kit includes the Cellset
harness).
