OKay, I am confused a bit.

LIke I said in the previous post....

I had bought a Garmin 2720 w/ pre-loaded software (I just did an update to
get it up to version 6.something)....there was also a cd-rom for mapsource
(which I loaded). The Mapsource if version 7. Unless I am reading this
wrong....there is a newer version of Mapsource...version 8. I am trying to
get that. For some reason I cant seem to download it. I need that unlock
key but I never got one in my box when it was bought. When I installed the
software orginally, there was an option to let the computer read the unlock
key directly from the GPS unit (which I did because I never got a paper that
said the code). My question is, how do I get version 8?? I should be able
to get it for free as I just bought it like 2 weeks ago, but I am having the
darndest time figuring it out.

It sucks to be technologically impaired at times

Although version 8 of CityNavigator-NorthAmerica was recently released,
I don't think the upgrade disks are available yet for those who already
have a previous version and just want to upgrade. I notice that
they're not listed on Garmin's site at:
http://www.garmin.com/unlock/update.jsp

Check there and I expect they'll be listed within the next few weeks.
At that time you'll be able to click on the right product and order it.
The disks are always free and in your case the unlock code will also
be free since you just recently unlocked the previous version.

Last question....yes, a stupid one

Mapsource and City Navigator....the same thing?

Is whats on my computer the same thing that is on my GPS?

Sorry for 'duh' type questions....but like I said....very very new to all
this.

I'd call Garmin (1-800-800-1020) and talk to them. I
recently bought a 76CSx with CN V8. It showed up a day prior
to my leaving for a trip to Alaska. When I came back I
couldn't find the unlock code for the maps to save my butt.
I called them and after a minor Q&A period, they generated
me a new unlock code.

If you just recently bought a V7 version, my guess is that
they'll upgrade you to V8 for free. The key would be
"recently". Can't hurt to try though.

Not stupid, and no apologies needed. MapSource is a PC application (can
be downloaded for free, comes on a CD with most units) that manages the
optional MapSource mapping software packages. City Navigator is the
mapping package that gives you additional street and highway detail.

You run MapSource, choose City Navigator, select a region, and it will
make and upload a map of that region to your GPS. If you choose to make
maps from multiple applications (City Navigator North America, U.S.
Topo-East, and U.S. Recreational Lakes with Fishing Hot Spots East for
example) MapSource merges that all into one file and uploads it to the
GPS. An adequate amount of free memory/expansion memory is needed on
the GPS of course.

Garmin's naming isn't the most intuitive sometimes. "MapSource"
generally refers to the software program that lets you load maps to the
GPS and manage waypoint/routes/tracks. It runs on your PC and
supports a variety of different Garmin map types. CityNavighator is
one of the map types and some others are TopoUS, Topo24K, BlueChart,
MetroGuide, WorldMap, etc.

> Is whats on my computer the same thing that is on my GPS?

The maps and Points-of-Interest data will be the same, but the
software/firmware that lets you use them is different since it's
running on very different computing platforms. So things like searches
will work a bit differently when done on your PC compared to on the GPS
and also the routing might look a little different.

I appreciate the help. That helps a lot.

I have to respond seeing from where you are from. My family (mom and dad)
and extended family, grew up in Ellsworth (later moved to Columbus
Ohio)....but I go back there quite often to visit relatives. My mom just
moved back to Maine (in Portland). I bet you love the traffic in town right
now. Ahhh..tourist.

Once again, thanx.

You're welcome.

Ellsworth is a great town and in a great state, we moved here from
California in 2001. We live a little east of town off Bayside road
(ME-230) so we don't get beat up by the tourist traffic too much. But,
needless to say, we don't go out to the island much this time of year
though.

Cheers,

Jack

No. MapSource is the PC program that displays the maps (such as those of
City Navigator) on your computer.

> Is whats on my computer the same thing that is on my GPS?

Almost, you would usually load all the maps on your PC, so you can use it
for route planning etc. and then transfer those required to the GPS.

Does MapSource let you up load maps from Streets & Trips? I've used that
program for years on my desktop & sort of like it but then again I haven't
seen any of the Garmin maps yet & they might be better.

No benevolent sharing of maps between Micro$oft/Garmin/Magellan/anybody
else exists to my knowledge. They all want your money.

I have M$ S&T 2006 on my desktop and can use it on a laptop if I want to
go mobile with it. But I haven't gone mobile yet because I use a
handheld for that. If I took a longer trip in a car/RV/boat I'd
probably have the laptop and a mouse style GPS receiver along.

The data in S&T 2006 was the most up to date mapping I had seen when I
got it this spring. It had some new roads in my area on it and that was
the first time I had seen those.

Having S&T 2006 on a PC without a GPS is good thing. I find my self
using it regularly just for looking for places and quickly figuring
routes and distances to places. I think it is a bargain at the MSRP or
$40 +/-, I got mine (a legal retail package, not a copy) a lot cheaper
than that.

The Canadian mapping is for all the major national and regional highways
and streets in major towns and cities. Probably good enough for
tourists but Canadian residents would probably like more detail mapping
for the entire country.

My S & T was $16.50 after rebate. I guess I'll have to buy Garmin's maps
when I go. I'm still a little confused about what's not included with the
Nuvi 350. If all the US roads are included in the unit what else could I
possibly need?

If the Nuvi 350 (North American version) comes with City Navigator NT
preloaded, you have the street level detail for the U.S. and major
Canadian cities and also national/major highways for both the U.S. and
Canada. If that's enough, you don't need anything else.

The Garmin web page for the Nuvi 350 does not indicate any compatibility
with any MapSource topo or marine charting packages so maybe there is
not anything you could add to it.
