Garmin GPS Health Risk: Proposition 65
|
|
|
| I came across this the other day. What are the health risks associated
with the Garmin units and how can they be mimimized or avoided?

Actually, that's where I read it, but the link or info from the Garmin
site did not specifically say what the chemicals or products in
question are that posed risk(s).

I think that if you don't eat your receiver, you'll probably be in
good shape.

That's my take; but if you choose to, at least remove the batteries first ;)

Isn't it always the same with electronics -- heavy metals?
In any case, the greatest health risks posed by the Garmin (and a vast
number of other gadgets) are:
1. Wrecking one's car while fiddling with it. Set it while standing
still.
2. Choking while attempting to swallow it whole. If you must eat it,
saw it into small pieces.

C'mon, don't be a food nazi. Eating /one/ small GPS receiver never hurt
anyone.

| It's more of a health risk to be stressed out trying to find my way
around without one!
This is a funny thread.

Not looking up in time to see that the road turns and you are headed
off a steep embankment.

Having a passenger play co-pilot and the driver paying attention to
the road and traffic patterns.
(Or are we talking about not having little kids chew on the lead
solder that is in the unit? Seemingly this is a major health problem
in California judging from the signs one sees in every store.)

| Prop 65 is typical CA legislation - fuzzy good intentions with zero
thought. Everywhere you go in CA you see Prop 65 warning notices. As a
result, no-one pays any attention whatsoever to them and
places/products that actually are dangerous are totally
indistinguishable from harmless ones. All Prop 65 achieved was to waste
money (as I said, typical CA legislation).
