On a recent outing with my month-old StreetPilot i5, I noticed a
disturbing oddity in the display. Without rhyme or reason, some of the
"shield" road number symbols for state and interstate roads are not
displayed; instead the road number is in a plain white rectangular box in
a very small type face.

Different stretches of the same road are inconsistently labelled, even in
the same vicinity: some will have the shield, and others not. Otherwise it
seems to function normally, but the corruption makes the map hard to
interpret, and I'm wondering what else might be wrong that I haven't
detected.

I've tried removing the batteries; but have not yet performed the user
data erase described in the manual as I really don't want to lose
everything. Has anyone run across this before?

This is the new i5 version with the V8 map data, and the current (V3.10)
firmware.

Postscript: this morning (since I saw this coming anyway) I performed the
reset procedure as described in the manual, and erased all user data. The
problem persists just as before.

I have come across this as well. I think (not a map expert so don't bet
your life on it) that these stretches may be both interstate and county
roads. Or possibly there may be a county frontage road running next to the
interstate.

I was in the middle of an email exchange with Garmin Tech Support ... when
they suggested I give a time and phone number to be contacted at, as they
still didn't "get it" via email. I was going to take some screen shots
and send them as email attachments, when on my next outing it dawned on
me.

I that what I am seeing is (as you suggest) the i5's way of displaying a
road when it can't figure out what it is, or if the information it needs
to display simply won't fit in the little "shield" symbol.

What did it for me was finally getting the right view of some of the roads
that this happens on. I am in northern NJ, and there are some stretches
where the nearby interstate highways, I-80 and I-95, appear in the shield
sometimes and in a plain white rectangle other times. Then it hit me ...
on some of those stretches, there are TWO I-80's and TWO I-95's ...
"express" and "local". One one trip I caught it ... it actually said "95"
in the rectangular box and "EXPRESS" directly under the box.

In another case, state roads 1 and 9 sometimes run together. I was seeing
"1" and "9" separately in the white shield symbol, but I guess "1 & 9" won't
fit in that little shield, so instead it appears in a wide, plain white
rectangle.

My initial concern was that there might be some corruption of data, but I
am now sufficiently reassured this is not the case; it's just making the
most of the limited display capabilities.
