If I'm understanding the question correctly, just save them
to a .gdb file on your harddrive from the old v5 version and
then just load the .gdb file into V8.

| When you install the V8, V5 is gone. But what I did was load waypoints in my
2610 w v5 into PC with v8.
That worked ok

You don't loose the previous version just because you upgrade.
Besides, the waypoints aren't connected to any specific map product.
You can open and view waypoints from a gdb-file on any map product,
regardless of which you used to create them.

I'm a little confused by the descriptions and comments here.
The waypoints and routes are saved in the memory on the 2610, not on the
CF card. And there are not *.gdb files on the 2610.
So if you download your waypoints and routes to MapSource on a PC, then
save that to a *.gdb file from MapSource, you can subsequently upload
that data to any GPS that you can talk to from MapSource.
The only thing "lost" in the V5 to V8 upgrade is the V5 install in
MapSource. If V5 does not go away when you install V8, you can
uninstall V5 from the Control Panel.
If uninstalling V5 from the Control Panel also uninstalls your MapSource
installation (it is another stupid programming error by Garmin if that
happens) just install MapSource again from the V8 DVD or CD's.
If you had a *.gdb file for the maps that you originally uploaded to the
GPS from V5, and it is still in your MapSource install, you can open
that file and it will select the same maps you had before (maybe, or
maybe with some minor differences due to changes in map sectors).
When you upload the V8 maps to the 2610, it will overwrite the V5 maps
that are there.
It is a good idea to download all your routes and waypoints to a backup
*.gdb file whenever you connect the 2610 to the PC. I do that with my
76Cx (file is named yymmdd_all.gdb) and it has saved me a couple of times.

I think terminology is being mixed up a bit here. Mapsets,
waypoints, routes, etc are not stored "in" Mapsource. They
can be generated with Mapsource and transfered to a GPS
device. At this point if you close Mapsource, the mapset,
waypoints, etc are lost as far as your PC is concerned. The
only way to save them on a PC harddisk, CD or whatever your
medium of choice is, is to have them in Mapsource and do a
"File-Save" or "File-Save as" (I'd recommend option 2) and
then save the gdb-file out of Mapsource.
The mapsets, etc. are saved on the GPS unit (if they've been
transfered to it) until they are overwritten by another
transfer to it.
If you have gdb-files from an "older" version of Mapsource,
they can be loaded into a new version, BUT the new version
will only recognize the waypoints, routes, tracks, and
topomaps. CN maps will not be transfered into the new
Mapsource version as they are from the old version and the
new version will not recognize them. You'll have to reselect
them and re-save your gdb-files to that you have complete
data in the gdb-file.
Mapsource will recognize the topos because they are not
dependent on any particular version.
You can merge gdb-files but I've babbled on long enough...
and hopefully, I've explained myself clearly.
