Author How do transfer MS US Topo NP autoroute to eTrex Legend Cx?

When I make a route using autoroute to follow a road or
trail in Mapsource US Topo National Parks then transfer it
along with the map area to an eTrex Legend Cx the route
becomes a straight line from start point to finish point.
Is there a way to maintain the route following the road or
trail and not just point to point after it is loaded into
the eTrex Legend?

Thanks ,
Lou

When selecting your maps, make sure the "include route calculation
data" box is checked.

I think I figured it out. When I transfer the route it seems
to loose its autorouting along the path (its a straight line
if I view it on the units map) so I have to recalculate it
by selecting navigate. This is OK if I want it to figure out
the faster or shorter route, but if I want to stay on a
longer or slower scenic route plan that I laid out then
there is no option to keep the same route unless I manually
placed a lot of via points.

I also found a useful utility to convert tracks to routes
and visa-versa.

You see it as a straight line when select it from the Route page and
then choose Map to view it, right? I think that is the normal behavior
for when you Map any routes, to display them as point to point or Off
Road routes.

That looks like a handy utility, thanks for the link.

There was another thread going here where some were complaining that
MapSource does not send all the details of the route (routing,
avoidances, etc.) that are seen in MapSource to the GPS. That it only
sends the waypoints.

I don't see how it could be done any other way though. Routes are not
calculated until you activate them and the handheld is going to do that
by looking at the waypoints listed in the route and using the vectors in
the available mapping data.

I think to get the same thing in both places you'll always have to do as
you did and place waypoints to control the routing. Otherwise, you have
to let the handheld decide it.

There may be a way it could be done by including all the information
(map points, waypoints, avoidances, etc.) in a *.gdb file and having
handhelds that will read a *.gdb file. But it is not that way now.

Garmin really needs to think the use of the expansion memory through and
add some features there. Add some simple card utilities, let people
store and load waypoints, routes, and other stuff to and from the card.
