Thanks, Jerry. That helped a lot!

I just received my 60CSx and Topo 2008 from Amazon, but (of course), that
version 6.12 something of Topo did not perform the upgrade to 6.13.5 from
within Topo. It started, announced there was an upgrade available, but
then immediately came up with a communication error.

I am using a cheap Acer Aspire 3680 laptop with Vista Home Basic. I'd
like the software to work from the laptop, although I know the CPU is
underpowered (to say the least): Celeron 520 1.6 GHz, but I do have 2 GB
RAM.

That communication error seems to be a fault or program error that
everyone gets when trying that update link from within MapSource. Try
exiting from MapSource, downloading the update (MapSource_6135.exe) from
here:

http://www8.garmin.com/support/down...ails.jsp?id=209

If you save that to the desktop and then run it, it will update
MapSource without changing any of your settings or losing any data.

I'd think if the laptop will run 32-bit Vista it will run MapSource. But
the system requirements for MapSource do say "IBM-compatible PC running
Windows 2000 or Windows XP operating system." There is a legacy version
of MapSource (6.11.3.5?) that was the last version that is compatible
with Windows 98SE but as far as I know all the later versions of
MapSource will

That was the link Jerry M gave, and I was thanking him!

Good comments. I was wondering whether it was Vista that broke the
"workings" of the upgrade from within Mapsource, or an error on the part
of Garmin's software engineers. Apparently we can't blame Microsoft for
this one <grin>.
