Author Waypoint icons??

ok, bear with me... deer season opened here last Saturday.
I've been keeping some pretty strange hours and my brain
ain't firing on all thrusters....

The waypoint markers on my 76CSx are all flags which is
becoming very annoying. Sooo.... I deleted all of the
waypoints, routes, and tracks off of the handheld.

Went into MapSource and changed all the waypoint markers to
those little square boxes so they wouldn't take up so much
of the handhelds screen area.

When I transfer the routes, tracks, and waypoints back to
the empty 76CSx, I still get those freekin' flags on the
handheld.

Anyone wanna smack me up along side the head and let me know
what I'm forgetting please?

The set of symbols on your 76csx might not include the symbol you chose
in Mapsource. Change the symbol for at least one of the points on the GPS
to be what you want, and then upload that to Mapsource.

Thanks, I think you hit the problem.

I changed one on the handheld and uploaded it to Mapsource.
It displays the same one on the PC as the handheld.

Now I want to change them all to that but the icon I
uploaded doesn't show in the MapSource selection list and I
can't find any small dots, squares, etc that are on
MapSource AND the 76CSx.

There's got to be a way to synchronize them? The last thing
I want to do is to have to hand edit every one of the
hundreds of waypoints on the handheld. :-(

I checked and both the handheld and MapSource are up to the
lastest software levels.

I saw a change in the icons moving from an eTrex to a 60cs.
I thought there was also some interplay between ExpertGPS and MapSource,
which I bought after I got the 60cs. I looked at the symbol description
in various gpx files, but I settled on the little green dot under "civil"
in Mapsource. If you hover the mouse over it in Mapsource, it says City
(small). It shows up as a little green dot on the GPSMap60cs as well,
found just above the "civil" on the 60cs.

In the etrex, I had been using <sym>Waypoint</sym> <type>Waypoint</type>
but that doesn't exist in harmony with Mapsource and the 60cs. <sym>City
(Small)</sym> <type>Locale</type> is the little green dots as seen in a gpx
file.

You can go to Setup Map and change the displayed size of the symbols a
little. And you can also set the zoom level where they will appear. I
think I have mine set to 5 or 8 miles so I'm zoomed out far enough that
they do not crap the screen up too badly.

With the zoom level set out further, you'll still see the waypoints in
an active route at lower levels if I remember right. It just controls
the display level for all the other waypoints.

Also, I have edited a couple of the custom waypoint symbols and uploaded
those to the 76Cx with Garmin's free ximage utility. I assign my
waypoints to categories and give each category a different symbol. When
I upload them to the 76Cx I see the edited symbols and can choose to
display only one symbol at a time to reduce the number of waypoints
displayed.

But when I download the waypoints and routes from the 76Cx MapSource
does not "honor" my waypoint symbol assignments and category
assignments. It changes all the symbols to the little black square and
does not put the waypoints in any category.

So if I want to upload the waypoints to the 76Cx and get the symbols
back I have to redo the symbol and category assignments in MapSource
before I upload them to the GPS receiver.

It is an annoyance but those are the kind of things Garmin does to keep
us on our toes and keep our minds young and fresh...

I've got the "Map Points: and "User Waypoints" set to
"Small". I'm usually zoomed into about less than 300 feet
when hunting.

That's kind of what I want, the little black squares. Right
now I'm getting those big blue flags for all of the
waypoints. I can change them on the handheld to small boxes,
but only one at a time. I have hundreds of waypoints and it
would take forever to change them one by one.

I tried changing all of the waypoint symbols to small boxes
in MapSource, deleting all of the waypoints off of the
handheld and re-downloading them all from MapSource to the
76CSx, I still get those &$#^^# blue flags on the handheld. :-(

Gotta be a way to do it. I sent Garmin a note, but probably
won't hear back from them until next week.

I think I got that wrong about what happens when I download the
waypoints that have custom symbols from my receiver. I just tried it
again with most recent version (6.13.5) and the downloaded waypoints
have the same symbols I assigned to them on the upload. And the symbols
remain as I assigned them when I upload them back to the receiver again
too.

But when they are downloaded the category assignments in MapSource are
no longer there. I suppose that is because there are no categories on
the GPS receivers and that info is not uploaded? So I'll just have to
put them back into categories again if I want to continue use them that
way in MapSource (and I do).

You're right, the little black square, if chosen from MapSource, becomes
the very annoying blue flag on the GPS. And to further the confusion,
if you choose the blue flag in MapSource if remains the blue flag after
upload.

So it may be that the black square in MapSource means "use the default
symbol on the GPS receiver" or something like that.

When you see the symbols offered for use on the GPS and compare them to
the symbols offered in MapSource they are not the same sets of symbols.
And MapSource offers no choices of symbol sets.

But if you take a group of waypoints on the GPS and assign them
different symbols I think you'll find that there are a number of them
that will be seen as the same or similar symbols in both places. I was
using a couple symbols that worked out that way for a while, those were
from the Marine group if I remember right but I don't remember the
details.
