Dumb latitude/longitude question
|
|
|
| Sorry for the probable dumb post, but I used my Vista for marking a hunting
spot. The location reads"
N41 16.796'
W80 24.845"
How does this convert to Terra Server which uses coordinates like this:
N41° 16' 44.1"
What's the conversion Method? thanks
Scott

There are 60 seconds in a minute, so 0.796" =3D 0.796 * 60 =3D 47.76"
Therefore the given latitude is N41 deg 16' 47.76"
And the longitude is similarly W80 deg 24' 50.7"

be advised though if you do it manually that one second is not the
same distance at 45 degrees latitude as it is at the equator..
the further north you go.. the closer together the longitude lines
are .. until the actually all converge at the North Pole.
the trickier thing is trying to mark on a paper map... what the GPS
lat long is... not an easy task... some folks use UTM... instead

here's how to actually measure distance between two lat/longs

| Hello SJ,
> What's the conversion Method?
The easy way is to download http://www.easygps.com or something similar.
Add you location as a waypoint in the right format, change format and look
again at the waypoint.

You should be able to change the display mode and get the one you need.
You are getting degrees and decimal minutes (hddd mm.mmm') now, you want
to have degree, minutes, and decimal seconds (hddd mm' ss.s"). That
would be under Units on the Setup menu I think.
You must have a typo on the westing above, I think it should read W80
24.845' (minutes) not seconds (").
If you have any waypoints now, changing the setting will change the way
they are displayed.
The other way to change a decimal fraction of a minute to seconds is to
multiply 60 by the fractional part. N41 16.796' would N41 16' and (60 *
..796) seconds or N41 16' 47.8".

EasyGPS would download from his GPS, if he had the proper cable.
Then he would be able to save a .gpx file, and open that in Google Earth,
instead of entering the waypoint into TerraServer.

I went to http://maps.google.com and simply put in the Search The Map
box:
N41 16.796 W80 24.845
and got a map just south of Lake Pymatuning.
The stick pin pop up says:
41.279933, -80.414083
+41° 16' 47.76", -80° 24' 50.70"
I backed out a bit because the resolution was too high, and then
clicked on the "Hybrid" map. And you can click for directions to
or from there as well.
So not only did it convert the coordinates, it gives a map to
double check it is the right spot. Your hunting spot isn't "secret"
any more! ;-)

LOL
It's actually Shenango lake. As for my hunting spot, after getting poured
on all day and seeing no deer, you can have it! Please pass the secret
around.
