Author Need Recommendations for Car GPS

Hello. I'm looking to get my two brothers a GPS for their cars this
Christmas. My sister and her husband have the Garmin C340 and love it.
They travel a lot in the South and Mid-West and they say they are very happy
with it.

What I'm looking to spend on each brother is from $150 to $220 for each
GPS. Cheaper would be better.

I have been looking at two Garmins - the C340 (the one my sister has)
and the C330. Looks like I can get the C340 for around $220 and the C330
around $180.
I've also seen a Tom Tom in Wal Mart for around $160 or so.

So, any suggestions? Are there any good GPS for cars for around $150?
What about those Tom Toms?

What are the main differences between the Garmin 330 and 340? From
what I have read, the 50 feet away" while the Garmin 340 will say "Turn on
Oak Street 50 feet away." Is the street naming talk will important?

I should say that I'm not looking to buy the best GPS out there. Just
something nice and that works.

Any other suggestions besides the Garmins and Tom Toms?

Thanks!

How about giving them a really nice unit - arguably one of Garmin's
better endeavors - a Garmin 2610.

They are out of production but the reconditioned unit may be had for
<$220 delivered. They come complete with a one year warranty and all
the accessories that came with my non-refurb that I bought a couple of
years ago for >$750.00.

I just bought eight of them from getfeetwet.com. I got them for a
couple of my employees and while I was at it, picked up extras for some
colleagues who'd seen my unit.

Does everything you'd want and is one helluva deal.

I'm not pushing towards getfeetwet.com but they had a good price and,
more importantly, they had sufficient quantity in stock to cover my
order. These are getting scarce but you can't buy a better unit unless
you have to have bluetooth and mp3 player capabilities<g>

I'd recommend that you give them each a little card saying that you're
passing this year, and you'll be extra generous next year. Then take the
money and buy a more expensive GPS with more features for yourself. By this
time next year, you'll know a lot more about GPSs and you'll be able to make
a more informed decision. They might consider some features - like TTS - to
be indispensable, and if you buy a cheap GPS, then they won't be happy with
it, but it will be hard to justify buying the one they really want when they
already have "a GPS." They might also have a low tolerance for some of the
dumb routing decisions that GPSs sometimes make, and decide that they can't
stand living with a device that sends them on five-mile detours because it
doesn't like a particular right turn.

Look at the Navigon 2100 saw it on one of those tv shopping channels for 175
dollars and free shipping and a lifetime of
traffic alerts. On a garmin your traffic alert cost is about 9 dollars a
month.

I also have a c340 and like it. Best bang for the buck from garmin.

cheapest place on the net. check the link

Nuvis (300 or 350) are reasonably relible units.

The StreetPilot c330 and c340 were great units in their day. But why
buy dated technology (with poorer screens, a bulky form factor and
inferior receivers) when you can get a nuvi 200 for under $180?

http://gpstracklog.typepad.com/gps_...holiday-de.html

TomToms are good too.

Text-to-speech is nice, but I'd rather get a quality unit (Garmin or
TomTom) than TTS on an inferior brand.

On my sisters Garmin c340, it has many local restaurants and stores and
such.
Does the TomTom One 3rd edition also have restaurant listings and other
places
of interest like rest stops and tourist stops?

Does that nuvi 200 have that feature that makes picking up the gps
signals in
cities easier?

Lets say I have $200 to spend on each gps - which one do I go after?
C330?
C340 with that text to speech feature. TomTom One 3rd edition? Nuvi 200?

Shipdog? I've never heard of this site before. Safe? Reliable?

Well, I guess I can get the C340 for $209 each and it has TTS. I dont
think
the Nuvi 200 has TTS. $209 for C340 and TTS, or Nuvi 200 for $180 with
no TTS. From what I have read the C330 has been the number one GPS for cars
for the last two or three years. Surely that and the C340 are still solid
perfomers?

The nuvi 200 has the improved chipset for superior GPS reception in
"urban canyons". The c340 doesn't. But you're right, the nuvi 200
doesn't have TTS. The nuvi 260 does, but the price climbs then too.

The TomTom will also have points of interest.

Me, I'd go with the nuvi.

I agree, the Nuvi 200 is a good bang for the buck. The reception is
extremely good, in comparison to my 20 channel SiRF star III Bluetooth
receiver.

I bought my wife a Nuvi 200 last month ($210) to use for a trip to New
England (600 mi) and she found it easy to program and use. It routed her
around Hartford, CT and saved her 20 minutes off her regular driving time
for that trip. FWIW, she is not a techno like I am.

She prefers the lack of TTS, since many units misprononce weird street
names anyway. The simple "turn left in 500 feet" or "turn right" voice
commands are less confusing to her than my TomTom TTS enabled PocketPC GPS.

Well, I ordered two C340's. I asked my sister if they ever lost satellite
signals
with their C340 and she said no. Even going under and thru bridges and
tunnels
thru Atlanta the GPS never lost the signal. I would have got the Nuvi 200
but
no TTS and TTS is what I wanted to get them. My brothers have seen my
sisters
C340 and thought it was pretty cool. Anyway, this was suppose to be a nice
gift and I think the C340's are nice. Now, if I get one in the near future
it will
definitely be a Nuvi with TTS. I got the C340's from Shipdog.com with free
shipping and they can be returned by January 14 2008. I thought it was a
good
deal, as long as this store in New Jersey or New York is legitimate. I did
not see
too many bad reviews on this store, mostly good.
