I just bought the SP c330 unit and purchased the Map Update 2008 City
Navigator North America NT DVD disk

When I downloaded the disk to the unit, there was a warning that the
c330 had only limited memory and that I could choose to download the
48 US continuous states and Puerto Rico OR Canada and some US border
states.

The reason I bought the update was to have the maps of ALL OF NORTH
AMERICA on the unit. Now I am stuck with only partial maps of North
America. I would like to return to the original, pre-loaded maps that
came with the unit if I can. I will have to contact Garmin and find
out.

It seems pretty stupid on Garmin's part to have an update disk for all
of North America and when you download the disk, you have only partial
coverage.I have downloaded Canadian maps, but if I drive to the US,
then what??

Anyone else have a similar problem?

Get yourself a 1 gb SD card and using your map uploader, add the rest
of the maps to the SD card using a card reader.. Then insert in the
unit and restart, all of NA will be available to you. The c340 has
enough memory to hold all of NA, the c300 doesn't.

BTW, that up date disc is for all of Garmin products, not just the
C330.

Using the selection tool in MapSource, merely select all the Canadian
provinces you need and then add whatever areas in the States that you
want/need. Okay, so you won't be able to load everything. Do you
really need to? Planning on driving from, say, Quebec to San Juan
Puerto Rico, to Dallas/Fort Worth, up to Minneapolis and then to Los
Angeles and on to Maui? <g>

I had the same problem with my 2610 and a 1 gigabyte flash card. Just
not enough room to load the entire City Navigator mapset at one time. I
had a spare CF card so I loaded everything from the west coast to east
on one (loading as much as I could) and on the other, everything from
the east coast to west. I figured if by some quirk of fate I wound up
driving the great race from NY to LA I could probably find a spare
moment as I drove through St Louis to swap out cards<g>

Below is a copy of a previous post outlining the process of using a SD card
to load all of the maps. I have not personally tried it, but I held on to
this post just in case I decide to do so.

c330 2008 map update
I have just finished installing ALL of the Map Update 2008 City Navigator
North
America NT on my Garmin C330. Once I got my head around what was actually
happening, I'd like to outline the procedure.

The 2008 CD installs a program called "MapInstall" on your computer to be
used
later. Don't forget.

-Your are asked to select between Canada (incl. Alaska & northern border
states)
OR lower 49 states (incl. Puerto Rico), which replaces the map info in the
C330.

-Now then, I have tried BOTH, but which one you load depends on what size of
SD
card you have, or want to buy. I can tell you that if you load the US/Puerto
Rico map, you can put ALL of Canada on a 512 mb SD card. If you load
Canada/Alaska, you can get away with a 1-gig SD card, but I had a 2-gig.

-At any rate, after loading your map, you will go to the program
"MapInstall".
Do NOT put the SD card in your GPS, but make sure it's on & the USB cable
attached. I have a Lexar USB SD card reader. When you start MapInstall, you
will
see both devices. Select the "Removable disk". You then have to select each
state or province individually to 'create' your 'secondary' map. It's easier
to
zoom in a bit on the North American map. When your selection is done, you
send
the info to the SD card in the USB reader. This takes some time, about 45
minutes to an hour.

When it's finished, remove the SD card from the reader & install it in the
slot
of the GPS. That's all there is. You do NOT have to select either map. You
end
up with a seamless North American/Puerto Rico map just like before. You'd
never
know that you had changed anything. All your previous waypoints etc are
there.

Like I said, I loaded Canada to the GPS, then the US to the SD card. I just
selected my friend's place in Lake Worth Florida as a destination. I touched
"Show Map" before Go! and voila, there it was, 2485.1 km away. I then
removed
the SD card and the mapping goes away. Stick it in & you're back in
business. I
don't know why I'd want to take it out from now on. I download the Florida
waypoint from MapSource, so your POi's must be on the GPS proper.

Since I only have the Canadian map on the GPS itself, I've got room to store
more POi's than this website can provide!

I'm in a similar situation. Talk about getting a SURPRISE....I just
bought a C530 and thought I was being super smart buying the Map
Update 2008 as well.

Realizing that North America was already installed on my C530 I
thought that Update 2008 was simply just an update and adding
corrections as necessary.

I opened the program only to find I was told I didn't have sufficient
memory even though it was recommended by Garmin.

I thought "Oh heck" I'll simply update the lower 48 states and proceed
letting Canada remain as is.

Never in my wildest dreams did I guess that it would completely NUKE
the Canada that had came preloaded when I bought it.

Now I can only navigate in the good old U.S. of A.

I'm at a loss as to what to do next. There has been talk of loading
Canada on a SD and using the external slot on the unit but I haven't
got a clue as to how to do it. Any suggestions? I downloaded MapSource
from Garmin's website but it won't open for me....possibly because the
C530 isn't connected or the Update 2008 CD isn't in the CD-ROM drive?

I'm not a computer guru and will need someone to lead me by the hand.
I will have to buy aa SD card but what type and also a CD card reader
that I can plug it into?

You already had ALL OF NORTH AMERICA on the unit. It was just with
last year's map data. If you had "just bought" the unit, why didn't
you contact Garmin to see if you qualified for a free map upgrade?

If you had checked with Garmin about getting the update, you would have
been told that you cannot fit all of the new map data onto it because
of the size difference. The c330 has a 1G drive, and the new map data
for both USA and Canada is larger than that.

Or install the rest of the maps onto an SD card, as Brian explained.

It's only too big for the older models like the c330. The newer models
have larger drives and can store the entire set. Also, when you
installed the Canadian maps, they included the US "Border States", so
you do have the northern most tier of US states at the least.

I'm going to attempt to load what I am now missing onto a SD and
please correct me if I am wrong or offer advice.

[A]. The Map Update 2008 that I bought says "This Udate DVD supports
updating one Garmin unit."

As I have already loaded the lower 48 states into internal memory can
I assume that if I now choose to load Canada, border states, etc into
internal memory it's two strikes and your out? Obviously this move
will obilterate the lower 48 states. What I mean by this is that if I
then wanted to load the lower 48 states on the SD It may not be
allowed as the CD has been used as per "This Update.........Garmin
unit."?

[B]. Let's say I leave the 48 states in internal memory and not rock
the boat. I now want to load the Canada, etc. update onto a SD.
Brian's posting says:

< At any rate, after loading your map, you will go to the program
"MapInstall". >

How do you load the map? Do I put the Map Update 2008 CD back into my
CD-ROM drive with the C530 hooked up to the USB port? Just for
interest sake without the GPS attached I tried inserting the disc and
this is the message I eventually get:

1. Turn on your Garmin GPS.
2. Connect GPS to computer with USB cable.
3. If the "Found new hardware wizard" appears.......Windows will
complete the installation........click NEXT on this page to continue.

Brian then says:

< Do NOT put the SD card in your GPS, but make sure it's on & the USB
cable
attached. I have a Lexar USB SD card reader. When you start
MapInstall, you

you

45
minutes to an hour. >

[C]. This is where the posting above gets foggy for me....I obviously
have some sort of map preloaded from somewhere that I can zoom in on?
Is the Map Update CD 2008 being used?

[D]. If I can get to this point in Brian's posting I will be more
than happy.....I would have no problem seeing the unit on my dash with
an SD card sticking out of the memory slot.

< When it's finished, remove the SD card from the reader & install it

I guess I could make it simpler by just asking if someone would be
kind enough to give me a step by step outline as to how I can transfer
the balance of my Map Update 2008 (Canada, Alaska, etc) to an SD that
I can then plug into my C530. I've opened MapSource and followed thru
with my unlock code.....my C530 is also registered with Garmin.

That is what Garmin wants you to believe.

Load the SD card you want to use into a card reader and connect to your
computer. Then just run the MapInstall program that the updater put on
your computer. It will search for a device and find your SD card. Tell
it to use it, then the rest should be obvious. I did not even need to
have my Garmin unit plugged in.

You're not updating anything at this point, you're installing extra
maps to an SD card.

If you live in the USA, I recommend you leave the continental US on the
internal storage and install the Canadian maps, etc, onto the card. I
was able to install all of Canada, Alaska and Hawaii onto a 128M card I
had laying around.

Thanks for your reply....I ran down to the Source (old Canadian Radio
Shack) and bought a 2gb SD card and a card reader.

I followed your instructions and when I open MapSource I get the
message saying:

" MapSource could not find any MapSource map products. Please install
one or more MapSource map products and start MapSouce again."

Still can't figure how I can get the Canada update from the Map Update
2008 CD to the SD card?

Just relaized we are talking about two different things MapSource and
Mapinstall.....I can find Mapinstall any where under programs. Is this
program automatically installed when you open the Map Update 2008 CD?
Where do you look for it?

It should have installed when you did the update to your GPS unit.

Hi Frank.

I just did a search on XP for Mapinstall and it's not there. Would you
suggest I reinsert the Garmin CD, hook up the C530 and start over
again? I don't know if I might have missed checking a box to have
Mapinstall installed?

Also it would be more convenient for me to have the Canada / USA
border states installed on the internal memory but do you think I then
may not be able to install the lower 49 states on the SD card when I
figure out how to do it.

On my Vista Home Basic laptop with the Garmin Topo 2008 program there is no
Mapinstall either. I have now a GSP60CSx, and gave it a 2GB micro SD card
(Sandisk) from Staples ($18 + tax on Black Friday).

I opened up the Map Update 2008 CD using 'my computer' just to see
what was actually on the disc. There is a nice tutorial with voice
that shows how to select individual maps and either load them to your
GPS or on to an SD disc. No option to instal Mapinstall.

There has to be a way I can upload what I need from the Garmin CD onto
my SD disc?

Hi Frank,

I went to Garmin's website found Mapinstall downloaded it and I now
have the program on my computer. Still no luck, when I run the program
I still get an error message:

"MapInstall could not find any installed products. Please install one
or more MapSource products and start MapInstall again."

I had my SD card plugged in as you suggested.....still can't figure
out how the maps I'm missing can be transfered to the SD if the Map
Update CD 2008 isn't used somehow? The maps that it contains haven't
been copied to my hard drive?

This is how/why it worked for me:

Shortly after I got my c330 last spring, I got Garmin to send me a copy
of MapSource, which I then installed on my XP desktop. I primarily use
it to manage/back up my Favorites on my desktop.

A month or so ago, I was finally able to convince the CSR at Garmin to
send me the 2008 map updater at no charge since I had purchased my GPS
unit less than a year ago, and less than six months since I started
trying to get the update. Installing the update automatically
installed "MapInstall" onto my desktop as part of the upgrade process.
As I recall, I did not have a choice in the matter. I kept it
installed when I was done so that if needed at some future time, if I
decided to make a trip to Canada, I could swap maps.

Last week, I ran MapInstall, with an SD card in a reader, to install
the Canadian maps onto an SD card, and it just simply worked.

Hi Jeff,

The CD that I bought from Amazon is "Map Update 2008 City Navigator
North America NT" Is this the same as what Garmin sent you?

With this CD the C530 must be attched to the computer with a USB
cable. When the program opens it recognizes the GPS and the maps can
only be installed to that specific unit.

It doesn't install MapInstall at the same time. If the internal memory
of the unit isn't large enough to download all the maps it should
allow you to at least download the unused portion to a SD disc. The CD
was bought and paid for with good old $'s and the consumer has the
right to use all it contains.

To me it is obvious that the people here that can't load maps from
MapSource or Mapinstall never installed full install version of
version NT 8 on their computers. If they had installed it on their
computers it would automatically get updated first from the NT 2008
update disk before updating unit. If they did not have a full install
version disk to install on computer they should have called garmin to
see if they would have sent them the disk. Then there would be no
problem making mapsets from MapSorce or Mapinstall to download to
cards.

Hi Jerry,

Let's take pity on the poor consumer, namely me, who buys the C530 in
good faith and then, in good faith, the Map Update 2008 in order to
update the mapping software on the C530. Where does it say in the
instructions:

< If they did not have a full install
version disk to install on computer they should have called garmin to
see if they would have sent them the disk. >

Have I missed something in the fine print? Looks like I will be
calling Garmin on Monday. I appreciate everyone's attempts to try and
help me out.

Yes. When updating the GPS unit itself, that is the process.

Technically, you're demanding that because you're paying for 20 dollars
worth of gas, you should be able to put it all into a 15 gallon tank.
Using this analogy, I was able to come back later with a gas can and
walk away with my other 5 gallons.

The only reason why I can think this would not work is that for some
reason, you did not do a full install of the software. Perhaps if you
re-ran the update installer, you can find options you missed last time.

There will be no full install on MapSource from the update disk if no
previous full version was installed. I think only his unit was fully
loaded but did not have dvd with the unit to install it into
MapSource.

So you think the lack of MapSource on his desktop is why he's unable to
install the other maps onto a card?

Yes if you do not have any maps loaded in MapSource you will not be
able to load maps to a card. The maps loaded in MapSource are the same
maps Mapinstall would use to load to a card also. He would have to
have nt version 8 loaded in MapSource for nt version 2008 to update in
MapSource or previous full install of nt version 7 or 8.

You are correct in that the C530 did not come with a CD, it was
obviously loaded with North America 2007 at the factory.

Just for interest sake in case I missed some opportunity to check a
box prior to installation I re-inserted the DVD and hooked up the
C530. I followed thru with the installation up to the map selection
and with nothing to lose this time I selected Canada, Alaska and the
U.S. border states. I was hoping that when I clicked on 'install' and
the next window opened it would give me the choice of installing my
selection on the C530 or the PC or an external drive such as an SD
card. No such luck as it immediately began the installation on my
Garmin.....no opportunity to cancel so I replaced the Lower 48 states
with Canada, Alaska, etc.

No harm done because at least now I can navigate from my house in
British Columbia to the U.S. border....with my other install of the 48
states Canada disappeared.

I'll be on the phone bright and early to Garmin tech support and will
post what I learn on this forum.

Hi Jerry,

I do have MapSource installed on my PC but the Map Update 2008 doesn't
give me the opportunity to load it's contained maps into
MapSource....it goes directly to the C533.

I can open the Update 2008 DVD using 'my computer' and using Windows
Explorer locate the MapSource file under Programs and manually
transfer the files from Update 2008 to MapSource. The only problem
might be the unlock code. When I registered my Update 2008 DVD I
received a Unlock Code but only numerical and not as a file extension.

I'm sure tech support tomorrow will be able to solve my problem
(fingers crossed).

Cliff if you have the 25 digit code just copy and paste it in
MapSource. Click on utilities then click on Unlock Maps.. then click
on Next two times and then you can type or paste the 25 digit code and
then go to second line and put name of your gps in there and then
click next again and finish instuctions on the wizard to close it out
and your code will be stored in MapSouce. You can verify it is in
there by opening the wixard again and putting check mark by view my
unlock codes. Go ahead and install the map update from windows
explorer then you will be ready to load your mapsats to your unit.
When wixard comes up asking you to install the unlock code just close
the wixard out because you already installed it or you can install it
at the end of insatalling nt v2008. Your choice. You should not have
any problems then.
Jerry
PS if you had nt versions installed in MapSource you would not have to
go through this trouble as the update disk would have updated
MapSource first before updating your unit. Good luck.

Hi Jerry,

My first problem is that I can't open MapSource....when I try I just
get the message "MapSource can not find any MapSource pruducts". I
downloaded and installed MapSource from Garmin's website.

So what happens when you install the update disk through windows
explorer? That should let you open MapSource after you install and put
in your 25 digit unlock code.

Hi Jerry,

I opened the MapSource file using Windows Explorer and was able to
open the Unlock Wizard...as you suggested I was able to register my
unlock code for Maps 2008. I opened the Wizard again and was able to
view the code that I installed and as well the unlock code for my C530
unit is there as well. I am presently copying the Update DVD into the
Garmin MapSource folder....it will take a little time. I hope when I
then try and open MapSource it will recognize the files I copied and
open. I will let you know what happens.

Thanks,

Cliff

Hi Jerry,

When you say install the update disc thru Windows Explorer I think you
mean open My Computer which shows the Garmin DVD in E:/ drive....I
right click and then left click on Explore....when I found the .exe
file I clicked on it and it opened the same windows as if I had just
place the DVD in the E:/ drive and let it open itself. Same prompts
asking me to connect my GPS... no way to open MapSource.

As you previously suggested I copied all the files on Map 2008 to the
MapSource directory but again when I open MapSource I get the same
error message that no MapSource products are installed.

The program required is NOT *MapSource! The program is *MapInstall* that is put
on your computer automatically when you stick the 2008 DVD in to run. That's
"MAP-IN-STALL". Look for it on your computer. Start / All Programs / Garmin /
MapInstall.

I don't recall having any choice about installing it or not. It just kinda
'happens'........... when you run the Map Update 2008.

You are correct when you say that MapInstall doesn't show up as such when
browsing the DVD. But it DOES install when you run the DVD update.

Just for nuts sake, let me tell you this. I'm looking at my actual DVD disk and
printed just to the right of the "NAVTEQ on Board" logo, is the following:

007-01318-00 Rev. A
A00-10323-00

Now I don't know if different DVD's were sent out with varying content, but
MapInstall WAS installed on my computer at the same time I did the update on my
C-330.

Jeffery, have you noticed that when you open MapSource, you have the option of
selecting either "City Navigator North America NT v8" OR "City Navigator North
America NT 2008? I don't know if that is significant or not, but we both know
that we got our C-330's working just fine.

MapInstall uses all the maps that are installed in MapSource. The
update dvd first updates MapSource if you have previous versions of NT
loaded in it and yes it does put MapInstall on your desktop but only
works if you have MapSource first. I have 24 maps loaded in MapSource
and they all are available when i run MapInstall. MapInstall only
updates maps where MapSource does other things like create routes and
waypoints etc. that can be sent to gps units.

Read the warning under Notes;

If that is the case, maybe trying the thing of installing the Garmin
Training Center and then running the MapSource program update will give
him a full MapSource install. Doing it that way will reputedly give you
a full MapSource install and then he can run the map update.

Hey guys and girls,

Problem solved thanks to a posting of rebarber on POI Factory and here
it is:

<My daughters update CD came, and she loaded it. When the disk
autoran, it prompted her to choose from 'lower 48' or Canada, Alaska,
Hawaii. She chose lower 48, and it loaded to her GPSr fine. This
process did NOT install Mapinstall or any other Garmin software onto
her PC. I wanted to put the rest of the maps onto the SD card, so I
went to work...
First, I wanted to get Mapinstall onto the PC. To do this, I

Loaded up the 2008 DVD
I cancelled the installation
I opened 'my computer' and selected to explore the DVD
I went to: \windows\msi and ran CNNT2008Update_ENU.msi
This installed Mapinstall onto her PC and put the shortcut on her
desktop. However when I ran it, it told me that the 2008 maps were
present, but locked. I needed to unlock them, but I could not find her
unlock code. She did not remember having one for 2008. I found the
unlock code on her GPSr. To do that,

I went back to my computer and opened the drive letter for the GPSr
(not the SD card)
I went to \garmin and found a file ending in .unl
I copied that file and pasted it on her C:\ directory
I opened that .unl file with notepad.exe
There in front of me was the entire unlock code
I copied the code into the clipboard, and went back to Mapinstall.
When prompted, I pasted the code in, and voila! the maps were
unlocked.
From there, it was a simple matter to select the missing maps and
install them on her SD card.

(On a side note, I tested the maps by requesting a route to Saskatoon.
Worked fine, but I forgot to cancel it. When my daughter left to go
meet her friend, she called me back and asked me why her GPS was
trying to make her drive to Canada. I pictured her just following
along blindly, and then calling me from Saskatoon, saying she had no
idea how she got there. I hurt myself laughing at the image.)>

I called Garmin this morning and eventually talked to tech support
(before I found the solution on POI) and the techi said that there was
no way do do what I just accomplished. He said I would have to buy the
SD with Canada preloaded....I cried enough that he agreed to send me
the SD at no charge but they were back ordered. With my SD card in the
memory slot and when I click on 'Maps' and then 'Info' it now shows
all the maps that were on the Update 2008 DVD loaded and ready.

Thanks to all

Again not to belabor the point I can't be the only one who suddenly
discovered his or her C530 hasn't got sufficient memory for Map Update
2008. It took a lot of work on everyone's part including myself to
come to a successful conclusion. It's too bad there aren't any
'stickeys' on the forum for a permanent posting of the instalation.

I just got into this thread after purchasing the 2008 Map Update from Best
Buy. Thank you so much for this information, it worked like a charm for me
and I was able to install Canada/Alaska to an unused SD card I had on hand.
Since I live near the US/Canadian border, trips into Canada for me are
common, and I wanted to be able to have the mapping system easily available
to me.

Thanks again, very much appreciated.
