Nuvi Impressive Under Fire

| Got stuck in a bad traffic jam last evening -a multi vehicle crash had
closed the road I was travelling and all the traffic ended up funnelled down
a ramp onto a freeway. It was dark, raining and I was in an unfamiliar part
of a suburb I didn't know, even in daylight.
Although I knew the original route to my destination, I was playing with my
new Nuvi 270 by loading in POI points from Google Earth and had been
allowing it to 'second guess' my normal drive. Good thing I had it on!!
Within a couple of seconds of the point where the nose of my vehicle was
forced to point 'into the unknown', the dulcet tones of the Nuvi Girl was
saying "Recalculating" followed by "Drive 2.5 kilometers and turn right!"
The Nuvi display was showing an exit number and street names for my new
route, even tho it was in the totally opposite direction from my original
heading. With two merging major highways and unfamiliar streets (and the
dark and rain) I just put myself in my Nuvi's hands and followed the
instructions. After a short drive around the neighborhoods to the south and
east of my destination, I found my self instructed to "Turn left!" and
darned if I wasn't a block away from my goal !
Pretty impressive. I could still be driving around looking for a way home!

Neat. Most of us know the best way to and from work or to their mother's
house, but there are times you get stuck and have to deviate in unknown
places. The ability to recalculate on the fly is very handy. Sometimes the
software does not take the "best" route, but it has not let me down yet.

time motorway journey I have driven a hundred times was disrupted by a
road closure with a badly-signposted diversion. I picked a direction at
right angles and drove for 15 miles ending up in a small town, then let
I actually had maps with me but it would have been hard plotting the
did a pretty good job.
