| Hello all,
I received this nifty little GPS unit for Christmas and was wondering about
new maps.
The street maps that come with it are not that detailed. Before I purchase a
better, more detailed street map on SD card, I wanted to get a few opinions
on them.
These little cards are not cheap! ($109 US is best price I found.)
Thanks

only the maps are not cheap. If you buy the DVD version of the maps you
can use cheaper storage cards.

You are correct. I though about that and did more research. The cards are
almost a freebie when you compare them to the map on CD-ROM.

If you have a computer that will run Windows based programs, I would
suggest you consider buying the DVD-ROM versions so you have the
maps on the computer too - much more flexibility.

Well, I purchased a CD with the map update on it. Got a micro SD card as
well.
the software deleted the old map and then informed me that I have no map on
the unit for it to update. I powered on the unit and the base map still
exists. (it shows only major highways in NYC, like that's going to help....)
Sent an e-mail to Garmin but I am not holding my breath. Their website is
the awful. Many links are broken or return blank pages. Usually those
relating to customer service. Creating a user account is impossible. (I
created one but can't get back into it, lovely....)
If this is the level of customer service from Garmin, I am not impressed. I
guess it must get better from here, right?

The GPS receiver comes with a built-in mapset. If the software in the
unit gets updated that may also update the base map. Maybe there is
another way to update the basemap, but that will not get you Topo map
abilities, or CitiNavigator ones.
If you then buy CN or Topo maps, you can ()apparently buy map updates for
the older versions. None of the maps will be up to date on the ground,
since it takes years before such maps get updated.
Otherwise, I had to email support, and received an answer in a reasonable
period of time, given that I contqacted them just before Thanksgiving.
Yes they could be faster, but it was OK, especially since I received the
answer I liked (I can get a rebate of $50 on the GPS, and a $30 one on
Topo). Just waiting for it now.

You want to buy MapSource City Navigator North American 2008 or
MapSource City Navigator North American NT 2008 (the latter is the
better choice of the two). That comes on a DVD, not a CD.
Then you install that, run MapSource, and select a number of segments
and than transfer a supplemental map (it will have the additional
detail) to the microSD card. If you transfer all of the maps on the DVD
(for all of North America) it will require a 1 GB card for the NT
version or a 2 GB card for the regular version.
Run the tutorial that is on the MapSource DVD, it is worth the time to
do so.
Once you get the maps on the GPS, you'll have to turn them on to see
them. It is all described in the manual I'd think...

Maybe not, read the other posts. Someone else mentioned that the full NA map
requires 2GB.

Jack,
Thanks for the helpful answer. The disc I have is "Map Update 2008 - City
Navigator North America NT." on DVD.
One question. Is a Segment a Map? (as a layman would refer to it.) i.e. - A
Segment might be all the streets in New Jersey or NY?
Thanks again for the help.

The US etc map is divided into quite small segments. For example in TOPO
USA 2008 NY City, ~ 34St and 11th Ave in the SW corner to Scarsdale in the
NE corner of 1 rectangled segment. Geographic area of a segment depends on
the maximal detail in the digital map - more detail, smaller geographic
area. What you can load onto the GPS receiver depends on the memory size
(GPS and/or memory card).

I've read the posts . . .
The OP should buy a DVD version of CN NA and an empty mSD card
He bought an Update Version - quite useless
and he wrote he bought a preinstalled map on mSD card
No one mentioned such a silly and useless combination.

What led you to believe it had pre-installed maps on it? I never said that.

Ah, That makes sense.

Apparently you bought the update to the prior version of CT NA.
Since you probably don't have that version, you should return the
update and purchase the full version as Jack mentioned.

hi Squat,
you wrote the software deleted your map . . .
If I'm wrong - sorry ;-)
then there should be no more problems - besides the update version of
the Map. With an update version you are able to update your Nuvi map.
You cannot install an update version on a PC without a standard
installation first.

Okay, that will want to update an existing install of City Navigator
North America NT. If that was a "provided for free" update DVD then it
will have to be unlocked after it is installed in order for you to see
the new mapping. Or so I think anyway.
If you can see City Navigator North America NT 2008 listed as a choice
in the top left corner of MapSource and you see the map details when you
choose it, then it is unlocked.
> One question. Is a Segment a Map? (as a layman would refer to it.) i.e. - A

When you use the Map tool the segment under your cursor will have a
yellow border. If you click on the map it selects that segment for
uploading. When selected, segments turn pink.
You can zoom out to see the limits of the segment and select more
segments. Selections toggle to unselected when clicked again, Ctrl +
click will also unselect segments and you can click and drag and Ctrl +
click and drag to select and unselect larger areas.
The segments in the NT version are much fewer in number than the non-NT
version. I think it is about one segment per state in the NT version
but I use the non-NT version because NT won't work with some older units.
The non-NT version has 353 segments and is about 1.7 GB with everything
selected. The NT version is about half that size and 50 segments I think.

You're welcome!
