Author Any method to backup favorites and/or POIs from C340???

I have two C340s, one for each car, and each has quite a number of
site specific favorites saved.

When I upgraded the firmware on one of them it erased ALL my favorites
and configuration settings. I've noticed now that there is a warning
of this at the start of the upgrade process.

I do not wish to loose my favorites so I am asking if anyone know of
or has used any facility to backup/restore these saved items on these
units?

Thanks,

Upload your favorites to mapsource, save them, do the upgrade,
download the saved favorites to the unit.

Thanks, Larry;

But exactly what is MapSource and why do I need it for my C340?

I've downloaded the latest MapSource software from Garmin, installed
it but it will not run stating "No MapSource Products found".

? ? ?

When you buy any of the optional MapSource mapping products (City
Navigator, U.S. Topo, etc.) on a CD or DVD, or if you receive them on CD
or DVD with a GPS receiver (the Quest II, 2820, or zumo 450 for example,
with come complete with an unlocked copy of MapSource City Navigator
North America NT), that MapSource product can be installed to a PC.

When you install the product the setup program will first install an
application named MapSource and then install the mapping data for the
product you purchased or received. The MapSource application manages
all your interactions with the mapping data installed to the PC and the
maps are seen in the MapSource window.

If you have more than one MapSource mapping product installed, you can
choose one for viewing. You can also view blank maps (a coordinate
system with no details) and some products come with maps of POIs that
can also be viewed. MapSource BlueChart marine charts for example, come
with a second map with marine services and tide points on it.

In some cases the mapping in the MapSource install is used to upload
maps to a GPSR that came with a only a basemap installed. The mapping
handhelds are examples of those receivers.

In other cases, like the Quest II, 2820, and zumos, the mapping
duplicates the mapping that is preloaded to the GPSR. That lets you
plan routes and place waypoints on the PC and upload them to the GPSR.

Then there are the preloaded GPSR that come with nothing to install to a
PC. Garmin's vision is that you didn't need it for those. You cannot
upload routes to those, they do not have tracks to download, etc. For
reference here, I'll call those the "simple GPS receivers".

Some workarounds have emerged that will let you place waypoints or via
points in MapSource on a PC and get them uploaded to the simple GPS
receivers so they can be Favorites or POI there. But, generally
speaking, the simple GPS receivers make less use of the PC mapping
installs. That may explain why Garmin left it out.

Human curiosity has resulted in many buyers of simple GPS receivers
asking Garmin to give them the mapping that was preloaded and Garmin has
done that. They have also refused such requests, and they have also
charged $15 to send the mapping. If there is a single and stable policy
on providing the mapping, I don't know what it is.

What you downloaded was an update. It wants to find an install in place
and update it and it is not finding one.

You can get around that by downloading the Garmin Training Center,
installing that, then running the MapSource update, and it will give you
a MapSource install. It essentially changes the Training Center to a
MapSource install. But that install won't have any mapping and there is
no way to get the preloaded mapping that came on your C340 (or any other
preloaded GPSR, simple or otherwise) transferred from the GPSR to the
MapSource install on the PC.

To have mapping under MapSource, it has to be installed from a MapSource
product CD or DVD..

Thanks Jack, excellent explanation.

Bottom line - no way to backup/reload my "favorites" available.

umm ... I don't think he quite said that.

There are multiple programs that will load the "favorites" from your
C340 (well they will with my C330 anyway). I purchased GPSU which has
that, and many other features. I keep a master set of waypoints
(favorites) and update my 2 receivers from that list.

EasyGPS and MyGPS claim this capability in a free package; look at
www.gpsinformation.net in the Links to Third-Party GPS Intermediate
Software section.

Good luck!

Thanks George;

This is what I was asking for originally. Search as I did, I did not
locate that link. Now that you have so kindly provided it I
downloaded, installed and backed up my GPS's contents.

On with the update...

Thank you and Happy New Year.
