I gather the card slot is used to store maps but is there any
communication between the card and the nuvi? If there is communication
where does it appear on the nuvii?

wouldn't be much sense in an SD card if the device can't communicate
with it now would there?

On that big screen that shows you where you are going.

The nuvis will read mp3 files from the SD card and they will also, in at
least some cases, recognize and use certain types of files on the SD
card. Examples are supplemental detail maps and *.gpx data files that
are located on the SD card.

In the case of the *.mp3 files I think the nuvi builds a catalog or list
of the files at startup and then that is displayed from a menu for
choosing a file to play.

I think I also remember someone saying that, at startup, the nuvi will
read a *.gpx file of waypoints or via points that was saved from
MapSource and save those as Favorites.

I think the nuvis always look at the SD card during startup and may take
some actions for some of the things found there.

It is all a little obscure because Garmin does not explain it or say
much about it. In some cases the files may have to have certain names
and/or be in specifically named subfolders. Supplement detail maps
uploaded from MapSource are generally named gmapsupp.img and location in
a \garmin folder off of the root of the card.
