60CSx map options?
|

| Just got a new 60CSx and I love it. I got it for hiking, but most of
the time I'm using it in the car. I got the 1:100,000 TOPO US that
Garmin puts out and have loaded those maps. I'm wondering what my
other options are for more accurate city navigation. Does the City
Navigator provide street number routing capability? And if I upload
those maps to my unit, will the new data live happily with the TOPO
data (will they overlay) or is it a 'one or the other' situation?
Thanks for the help I'm new to both GPS and these discussion groups.

| BTW what's with this NT designation? What does that stand for?

I believe it stands for "New Technology," which refers to a more recent
(and efficient) compression scheme for the mapping data, so that the
same maps from a "NT" DVD will require less memory on your GPS than the
same maps from a non "NT" DVD.
The only difference I have found (other than the smaller memory use) is
that a GPS will not "Find by Name" any point of interest (POI) from a
"NT" product, although it will find by "Nearest Containing."
In reference to your original post, you can load several mapping
products into your 60CSx... in your case, you would have the base map
and the Americans Marine Points database which comes loaded on the
60CSx, as well as your Topo US and (should you purchase it) the City
Navigator North America 2008 (either NT or not NT). While all these maps
can be loaded into your unit, I believe you can only see/use one series
of maps at a time - which is to say that you would have to disable the
City Navigator maps in order to see the Topo US maps (but this is easy
to do from the Map page menu).
It is not clear to me if this is entirely true of the pre-loaded mapping
data, since when I have City Navigator North America NT 2008 active, I
can also see/use tide stations (which reside in the Americans Marine
Points database), so in this case, at least, I have access to two series
of maps (data) at the same time.

The marine info showing while other maps are loaded is new to me, but on
several Garmin units that I have owned, including the 60CSx, you can load
more than one map type at a time, but you can see only one on the screen.
The unit prioritizes the sets. I often use City Navigator, Roads and Rec,
and Topo at the same time. In that case they are prioritized in the order I
typed them in above, so if I disable CN, I will see R&R, and I have to
disable R&R as well as CN to see Topo.
