Nuvi 350 and Topo Maps

| Hi,
I've have my Nuvi for just a few days and love it.
The manual is not very clear on what additional maps can be used with
this thing. I have Garmin Mapsource Topo software that I have used with
my ancient Emap.
Anyone know if I can load this software into the Nuvi?
On the internal drive or onto an SD card?
Thanks

Is that is one of the older versions of Topo that did not require
unlocking? If so, try creating a map from MapSource to the SD card.
That should give you a file named gmapsupp.img in a folder named
/garmin. That will work on a Zumo and maybe the Nuvi is the same way.
You'll have to turn the City Navigator map off to see the Topo map.

| Jack,
Yes, it is an older version that does not require unlocking.
I will give your suggestion a try.
Thanks,
Brian

| I loaded the Topo maps with no problem.
It turns out that all of NH and Mass take up only 10 or 12 MB, so I
loaded them onto the Nuvi's drive rather than to a SD card. Works fine.
I can can switch back and forth between them easily.

Are they in the root with the other files? Or in a \garmin folder? I
was wondering if that would work. I guess as long as none of the other
files are using that gmapsupp.img file name and the software finds the
file it will work.

Jack,
Looks like on both the nuvi and the flash card (I loaded it to both as
a test) the map gets loaded as garmin\gmapsupp.img
Not sure what the name would be if I loaded an additional map; maybe
gmapsupp1.img?

Nope, the GPS will only recognize the one file name. To add more maps
you to what you have now you have to go back to MapSource, reselect the
maps you already have (or open a *.gdb file you saved that selection
to), add the additional maps wanted to the selection and upload them.
That overwrites the existing file.
I've gotten in the habit of saving *.gdb files with various map
selections from various products so I can rebuild a map file with
selections from various products if I want to. You can open a second
*.gdb file and merge it with another but if you run two instances of
MapSource you can copy one and paste it into another to combine two
*.gdb files.
Also, I usually save a backup copy of the gmapsupp.img files to the hard
drive so I can get that file back without having to build it from
scratch again. Because only one file name works, I wind up with a
labyrinth of folders with one file and a *.txt file that tells me what
is in it.

| Jack, you are a wealth of information! Thanks for all your help in these
topics.
I have one quick question related to the above.
With the newer NUVIs with the preloaded CN v8 maps and database, is there
ANY chance that popping in a SD card with some US Topo (old non-locked
version) map on it, that that will in any way corrupt the preloaded CN maps
on the NUVI?
I have uploaded a set of maps to the SD card, and, as you explained, they go
into a file called gmappsup.img in a garmin folder on the SD card. But I am
the cautious type and am kind of nervous about introducing this card to the
NUVI's SD slot...
Thanks,
Mark

Thanks for the compliments. I'm addicted to GPS and this is my therapy
for it. :> )
I can't see any danger in doing what you want to do. The nuvi has a
Setting/Map/Map Info menu or page that will show you what maps you have
and it has check boxes for turning the maps on and off.
It also has a setting for turning the outlines of supplemental maps on
or off. If on they will show as light gray outlines of the maps when
zoomed out pretty far.
My assumption is the nuvi it will find the /garmin/gmapsupp.img map file
and list it and let you use it. The zumo is similar and it works that
way.
There is a hierarchy or something on what maps will be displayed so you
might not see the topo map details until you turn the CN map off.

I really can't see any risk in it. The CN maps are loaded to the
internal memory and are in a file with a different name. It looks to me
like something that will either work or won't work with no danger in
trying it.

| Mark,
Go ahead and use the SD card with the Topo maps.
It works fine in my nuvi 350.

What happens if overlapping maps are loaded?
For example, City Navigator North America and MetroGuide Canada.
Best wishes,

Jack, is this stuff documented anywhere. I'd really like to know what's
what on the unit. If I look at the \Garmin directory (see bottom of this
post) I can see stuff that sort of makes sense like gmapbmap.img is the
base map but what is it's format? I'm understanding that there can only
be one of these but it can be modified and saved? ...or not?

I really don't know of anywhere where those files are documented.
People have mentioned the files here occasionally in discussing various
topics. My Garmins (76Cx, 2610, 2620) do not show me the files in main
memory so I don't know what is there. The memory in the older models is
not seen as a removable drive, on the 76Cx see only the microSD card. I
guess they figure the rest of it is none of my business?
If your nuvi has CN NT V8 on it, I'd expect to see a large file that was
about .97 GB or 970 mb listed. I think that is the file size for CN NT
I've seen mentioned here before.
Will your nuvi save anything to the /gpx folder? If there are any *.gpx
files in there you can open them with MapSource. On my 76Cx the track
log is a *.gpx file and those are saved on the microSD card.
As for the format of the *.img files, that is beyond my ken. I know
that it is a compiled file of sorts and that people can add layers to
show additional details (like trails and stuff). Here are a couple of
links to sites with info about doing that and about making maps for
Garmins:
http://gpssledmaps.com/guide/
http://home.cinci.rr.com/creek/garmin.htm
I sort of got stalled on trying to make some maps, I need to get back to
work on it. Here are some maps that are of the sort that I'd like to be
able to make:
http://www.aracnet.com/~seagull/ORTopo/
That site and those maps are the work of seagull (John) who stops by
here regularly.

That is the case and \Garmin\gmapprom.img is 968,725K

Haven't tried it. Are you asking if I can save something using the PC
interface? Or, in the Nuvi itself? In the Nuvi itself the files and file
functions are hidden afaik.

Don't know yet because I don't have MapSource yet. DVD is on its way.
Will let you know once I try it.
