Map software update corupts C330 Europe unit
|
|
| JackSko 2007-01-26, 4:33 am |
| Hi all,
Recently (June 2006) I have purchased a Garmin C330 unit with preloaded
Europe maps. The unit worked OK.
In December I ordered an upgrade to map data (CityNavigator NT Europe v9
Update Disk), and have received it recently. I also have paid for and
received the unlock code. Installation of MapSource software went OK,
however, the update of maps on the c330 unit did not succeed. After a
long update activity on device, there was an error that update was
impossible.
What is worse, it seems that the preloaded maps became corrupted, so I
can only see general (highway) maps on the device, and no detailed maps.
In the Menu Settings/Map, the button Map Info is greyed out and cannot
be selected. Also, when I try to load maps through MapSource software,
the error message says that the required memory is missing from the GPS
unit.
The unit is unusable in its current state.
I have posted a question at Garmin support website but there was no
reaction.
I wonder whether there were similar experiences,

Yup. I assume we're both talking of v9 ?
I hit the same problem today.
I was e-mailed a 'pdf file which contains this nugget :
"After successfully unlocking the mapping for your unit,
you will see the below screen where you will need to choose
the region you want on your unit. You will need to choose
a region instead of having the whole of Europe because
Europe will not fit on your units internal memory."
"Put a tick in the box for the one you want to use and then
click NEXT."
Problem is that this screen does *not* appear !!!
Don't know where you are but UK Tech Support
have taken my e-mail address and promised to get
in touch as soon as a 'fix' is available.
I *have* sent a complaint to Garmin in the USA !

At last somebody with the same problem. Please let me know if you get
any further. I have now sent:
- request to Garmin USA support site
- request to cartography.europe@garmin.com
Both requests without *any* response, which is ridiculous!
BTW I am in the Netherlands.

I've sent a copy of the .pdf file to your hotmail

I had the same exact problem.... and I thought it was me silly in not
being able to update
I also wrote to the italian and european service,
from Italy I got a manual where the procedure was described
the point is that I exaclty did what they describe
they added that it can occur a "error message" at the end of looong
procedure
but no problem, the transfer has occurred
NO TRUE. The transfer is failed and the C330 is corrupted, no new no
old maps
moreover, no possibility to repeat the same procedure, the maps are
not uploadable
I am furious!!!

I have :
In Mapsource (on the PC)
1) City Navigator NT Europe + v8
2)City Navigator NT Europe v9
But, as far as I can establish, I still appear to have a working
copy of City Navigator NT Europe + v8 on the c330.

Do you have a disc to re-instate your previous version ?

I have CN NT Europe v9 on computer
and nothing more (so I think... it says "no map data available) on
the c330

I had the same problem on my friends C330.
Then i tryid one more time and now there whas no problem, but there is not
enough memory so i bought a 2gb SD ram for it. and now he has all of cn9 in
the c330.
you can, if you buy a 2 gb SD memory card download the maps from mapsource
via a card reader or directly through the C330 but it takes longer time than
through a card reader if it is a usb 2.0

That's OK if your c330 has an SD card slot . . .
The early ones, like mine, didn't !

ohh ok, i am sorry to hear that. i didt not know that :-(
I dont know, but if you live here in the north of europe you have to choose
either north of europe incl. GB or the south which incl Italy spain an so
on.
That is not a fair choise if you are a dane that travel mostly south on
vacantions you cant have the Italy or Spain and Denmark at the same time.
I hope that you get your problems fixed.
Kind regards

We all know and want the maps to cover more areas so they will grow each
year, so you will need to buy ekstra memory at some point, i think it is
fine that the newer C330 has this option.
What is not ok, is that it is only possible to choose 3 areas instead of
letting us choose each country we want :-(
Just think about the first Street Pilot III it came with 32 Mb ram and the
next year it came with 128 mb. To day that is to small, but it is only
possible to get a 256 mb original Garmin memory card wich cost the same as
tho nose af F16 fighter ;-)
Kind regards Jørgen

Region 'C' looks as though it covers Europe *except* Scandinavia
and the UK. If it's of help, I've posted the 3 diagrams at :
http://www.ian-stewart.dsl.pipex.com/quickies.html
So, if you can find your way to Hamburg . . . . . . .
>That is not a fair choice if you are a dane that travel mostly south on

That's only a problem for you 'sun, sea and sangria' seeking
Scandinavian chaps who want a change from Gamel Dansk !
(Personally, I prefer Jagermeister)
All I have to decide whether I'm going to head for Spain/Portugal
or in your direction (much more likely) from Scotland and re-load
the maps if necessary.
<Seriously.>
I got a 'fix' yesterday from Garmin UK.
It's a .bat file to select the Region but I'm not 100% certain
that it has worked correctly.
The unit now says v9 mapping is installed but I have no way
of checking whether these are correct as I can get maps
(on the c330 unit) of OSLO (Norway), GLASGOW (Scotland),
KOLN (Germany), PARIS (France), GRAZ (Austria)
and LJUBLJANA (Slovenia) _as_I_should_.
HOWEVER, I can also gets maps of MARBELLA (Spain)
and ROMA (Italy) and which, in theory, I should *NOT*
be able to do because of the memory limitations !!!
(According to the 'map selector', Region 'A' doesn't cover
Spain, Portugal or Italy !!!)
Logic says that, if the 'memory limitation' bit is true then
"something else" must be missing . . .

I'm waiting on a response from Garmin . . . again !
I'll let you know how I get on.

| Ian,
You said that you've received a .bat file from Garmin. Would it be
possible for you to e-mail that to me or post it on your website?
I've used now 3 ways to contact Garmin, each eith absolutely no effect:
- support webpage on Garmin U.S. website
- e-mail to cartography.europe@garmin.com
- support webpage on Garmin Netherlands website
I also waited a couple of days on each of those so in total this takes
more than 3 weeks now.
I find Garmin support an absolute shambles, so we should at least help
each other.
Cheers,
Jacek

I spoke with Garmin UK on the 'phone again this afternoon.
They confirm that the .bat file 'fix' referred to above
_has_not_worked_ !!!
They are now waiting on the US sending *another*
'fix' which they expect to have by Monday or Tuesday.
FYI.
Garmin UK cannot give me an e-mail address for
Customer Services in the USA.
Garmin in the US divert all correspondence relating
to European mapping problems back to Europe.
Unfortunately, as the payment was taken by Garmin
in the USA (AFAIK) any customer protection legislation
such as the Sale of Goods Act (UK) would not apply.
Much as I like to have up-to-date mapping, in light of
the problems encountered when trying to load these
updated maps, I don't see that it's worthwhile paying
Garmin for any in the future. $88 worth of aggro !!!
I purchased the unit in June 2005 with v7 maps pre-loaded.
Last year (2006), I purchased the v8 updated maps.
These (and Mapsource) loaded onto my PC without any
problem but it took several telephone calls and e-mails
with tech support before I was able to update the maps
in the unit with a drag'n'drop file which they supplied.
That 'fix' file was sent to me in October 2006.
In the interim, I had been obliged to spend 6 weeks
travelling in Europe without the updated mapping which
I had paid for in June !
Having now purchased the v8 mapping for Europe where,
once again, the PC installation was seamless but I am
unable to update the unit mapping due to, 'a software
problem which is under investigation'.
I am not impressed with the quality of update software !!!
Sorry about the rant :-(
If I hear any more from Tech Support, I'll post it here.
