| I have just purchased a Garmin 2610. It came with a 128meg card, which is not really large enough. I have ordered the update CN8 maps and was wondering if a 2gb card would be large enough for all the US maps, using the CN8. Also, there are three different ones (plain SD, Ultra and Extreme) that I have seen and would like to have some opinions of which would be best. I will be using the gps on a motorcycle as well.
Thanks in advance!

| 2 Gig's is enough for everything. I have the same thing and am using NA8. Just get the Cheap plain version of Compactr Flash, the more Expensive versions won't do anything for you, they are for Write Speeds, and the 2610 isn't writing to it other then when you first install the Maps and it's a little faster if you plug it into some other USB2 Memory Card Reader/Writer, so it's just a waste of money.

You can get all of CN North America V8 on a 2 GB card (it actually takes
1.63 GB).

You want CF cards for a 2610, not SD. Although you could use SD cards
with a CF to SD adapter. Buy the standard cards, not the Ultra or high
speed cards. There is little or no advantage to having the high speed
cards and some devices can have a problem with them.

I have 2 2610s and have the sandisk 2gb ultra cards installed in both
units and it does improve speed of recalculations. It made my 2610
alot faster then with the standard 2gb cards which I still have loaded
for backup for both units. Have never tried the extreme cards. The
standard cards are ok but the ultra cards are definitely faster for my
2610s. Have done many tests with both cards.

Thanks Jerry. Would you suggest to stay with the Sandisk brand instead of
some other off brand?

Thanks for the first hand report on the use of the Ultra cards Jerry.
Yours is the first I've seen.
I've been steering clear of the Ultras because of some problems that
were reported with them when they first came out. The problems were
stated pretty generally and not clearly associated with specific GPS
brands or models but those problems (and the prices) were enough to make
me lose interest in them.
I recently got a 2610 too and have been using 2 GB SD cards in SD to CF
adapters because I did not have any larger CF cards. I'll give the
Ultra cards fair consideration now.
I've read that CF cards larger than 2 GB generally need devices that can
use cards formatted for FAT32. Have you tried any FAT32 cards in your
2610? Or any cards larger than 2 GB?

Just as a reminder, though, Sandisk Ultra microSD's have been reported
as problems in 76Cx and related series.

Thanks for the info Carl. I was not even aware that there was an Ultra
microSD card on the market already.

I've only seen the reference to the 1G cards, but assume the same is
true if Ultra is available on the 2G cards. As I understand it, the
Ultra's don't stand up to the 76xx work environment. I'm sure there
are others in this group who have a better understanding of the
problem.

Jack I have never formatted the ultra cards for the 2610. Just use
them the way they come from factory. Also as of now 2gb is largest
card 2610 can use. 2gb sandisk compact flash cards have always worked
perfect in my 2610s. But the ultra micro secure digital cards don't
work correctly in the 60 and 76 series so I use the standard sandisk
micro sd card in my 60CSx. But in the 2610 series the ultra is the
best card I have used.

I don't have any Garmin GPS using external memory card so I can't share
any experience, but I am using from 1GB up to 8GB CF on digital camera =
and
they all work fine. I read some camera users using 16GB CF and one had
problem getting the camera to recognize 16GB (can't remember how he =
solved
the problem).=20
